特に数式を含む文章を英訳する場合に、単語”approximate”を動詞として使うことがよくある。
元々”approximate”は、副詞”approximately”の形で「およそ、約」の意味で使うことが最も多い。この場合に、”approx.”という略語の形も結構お目にかかる。
She is approximately seventy. = She is seventy approximately. 「彼女はだいたい70歳だ。」
“about”よりやや堅い語のようである。

この”approximate”が動詞として使われる場合「･･･に近似する。おおよそ･･･になる。」、「・・・を概算する。見積もる。」のほか「・・・を･･･に接近させる。近づける。」等の意味を持つ。
