と言っても別にオカルト的なことを書くつもりは全く無い。ただ「念」という日本語には様々な意味があり、また「念」を使った熟語も多く、これらを英訳する場合に結構苦労する。例えば「念のため」という日本語をどう英訳するか？

今回はこの日本語「念」について少し考えてみる。
まず「念」を広辞苑で引いてみる。「念」には以下の意味があるようである。
①おもい。考え。気持ち。「感謝の念」「観念・残念・念頭」
②気をつけること。注意すること。「念のため」「入念・丹念」
③深く望むこと。深く思うこと。「念願・記念」
④となえること。「念誦・十念」 ※「十念」は仏教用語。
⑤きわめて短い時間。「念念・一念＝刹那」
⑥経験を明瞭に記憶して忘れない心の作用。憶。憶念。（仏教用語）
等など。
「念のため」は②にある。⑤については全く知らなかった。⑥は無視して良いだろう。

①Thought, mind, heart, feeling, emotion, sentiment, reminiscence, etc
②Attention, notice, care, caution, precaution, advice, warning, etc.
③One’s dearest (earnest) wish , eager wish (hope), one’s heart’s desire, yearning, commemoration, etc.
④Recite in one’s mind, chant, intone, wish, pray (to the gods) for ･･･, etc.
⑤Moment, instant, second, juncture, etc.
日本語の「念」１つとってみても、英語ではこれだけの訳語があることがわかる。以下「念」を使った熟語について例文を記載する。
