英語の表現を考える（動名詞を使った慣用表現） ０００７

動名詞を用いた慣用表現を見ていきます。

There is no ～ ing 「～することはできない」
It is impossible to ～ 、We cannot ～ で書き換えられます。
There is no escaping from the reality.
＝ It is impossible to escape from the reality.
＝ We cannot escape from the reality.
→ 現実から逃れることはできない。

It is no use ～ ing 「～しても無駄だ」
It is no use crying over split milk.
＝ It is useless to cry over spilit milk.
→ こぼれたミルクをみて嘆いても無駄だ。覆水盆に帰らず。

worth ～ ing 「～する価値がある」
His speech is worth listening.
→ 彼の演説は聴く価値がある。
This book is worth reading.
＝ It is worth while reading this book.
→ この本は読む価値がある。
×　This book is worth while reading.
注意："worth ～ing"、"worth while ～ing"は共に、同じ意味です。
しかし、"worth while ～ing"の場合は、形式主語の「Itが文頭」にくること
に注意してください。

cannnot help ～ing 「～せざる得ない」
I couldn't help crying at the news.
＝ I couldn't but cry at the news.
→ その知らせを聞いて泣かずにはいられなかった。

on ～ing 「～するやいなや」
On hearing the news , she fainted.
＝ As soon as she heard the news , she fainted.
→ その知らせを聞くやいなや、彼女は気を失った。

How about ～ ing 「～するのはどうですか、～してみませんか」
"What do you say to ～ing ?"
How about meeting at the station.
＝ What do you say to meeting at the station ?
→ 駅で会うのは、どうですか。

It goes without saying that ～　「～は言うまでもない」
It goes without saying that such a hard worker as he will be recognized .
→ 彼のような努力家が認められるであろうことは言うまでもない。

次の各文を動名詞用いて書換えなさい。

解答：
①　There is no mastering English in a month or so.
→ ひと月やそこらで英語をマスターすることはできない。
②　On leaving school , he went into business.
→ 学校を卒業すると、すぐに、彼は実業界入りをした。
③　I could not help reading through the story.
→ 私はその本を読み終えずには、いられなかった。
※　"read through" 「読み終える」
