Susan told STV’s five thirty show: “Basically I wanted to fulfil a wish to my mother that I wanted to do something with my life. Not only that but I felt like I had a bit more to offer.”

Speaking of Susan’s performance on the show, friend and neighbour Ann said: “she did a bloody good job.”

Another neighbour spoke about feeling sorry for Susan when she saw the audience’s initial reaction but added: “she shut their faces, she shut them up!”

Sony ends year with first loss in 14 years

ソニー　過去14年で初めての赤字

(CNN) -- The Sony Corp. announced net losses of $1 billion for the fiscal year ending March 31, ending a year in the red for the first time in 14 years.

ソニー（株）は、本業のもうけである連結営業損益が年３月31日期、10億ドル（１１００億円の赤字）で、過去14年で初めての赤字と発表。

The company announced plans to reduce plants worldwide to 49 from 57, including four factories in Japan.

同社は、世界中57工場を　日本の4つの工場を含み、49工場に下げる計画を発表しました。

The factory closures are in addition to 8000 job cuts previously announced.

The loss comes just months after Sony Chairman and CEO Howard Stringer took over as company president to take its troubled electronic products division directly under his wing. Sony, once the iconic maker of the Walkman, has seen it lose ground to popular devices such as Apple's iPod.

SINGING sensation Susan Boyle gives a flash of her talent yesterday — as she appears to have forgotten to wear a bra.

She's become a global phenomenon thanks to an internet clip and even turned down an offer to have dinner with President Barack Obama.

And now Susan Boyle has revealed she no longer considers herself lonely and has millions of friends thanks to her overnight stardom.

The 48 year old church volunteer spoke of her new found fame during a two-stage interview on the Oprah Winfrey shown in the US tonight.

Susan was the star guest as Oprah was joined by TV judge Simon Cowell for a show called ‘The World’s Got Talent’.

'At school I was encouraged to be in choirs. I was kind of a slow learner in school, so something like singing was a good way of hiding behind that and boosting my confidence.

'One of the reasons I applied for the TV show was to try to see if I could perform in front of an audience.'

(AP) Interior Secretary Ken Salazar says the crown of the Statue of Liberty will reopen July 4 for the first time since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

(AP)内務長官ケンサラザール氏は、自由の女神の頂部が2001年9月11日の攻撃　以来初めて7月4日を再開すると述べています。

The statue was closed to the public after 9/11 because of security concerns. The base, pedestal and lower observation deck have since been reopened.

Salazar says about 30 visitors an hour, chosen by lottery, will be allowed inside the crown. He says that number eventually will increase.

The conditions seem ripe to become a first-time homeowner.

状況は、初めての住宅所有者になるに熟したようです。

Real estate prices are tumbling, mortgage rates are at record lows and there are big tax credits on the table.

All that might have you scrambling to assess whether you can afford to make the leap into homeownership.

That was the situation for 28-year-old Holly Dewar and her boyfriend last winter.

ただし　国民性か　大衆の反応は　異なっています。　たとえば　先日の米国飛行場でマスクを付けている方は　他国から経由してこられた方と　日本人の方などほんの4人でした。空港従業員は　ほぼマスクなし。

　アメリカメディアも　新インフレの報道は盛んですが　どこか　いままでの風邪の流行とかわらないと見ているような様子です。

ただし　1900年初期のスペイン風邪が　2度目に再流行した時　被害が4000万人死亡の報道もあり、今年秋以降に　もっと恐ろしくなるのでは、　それまでにワクチンなど十分準備して欲しいと話していました。　

これも　人気のオバマ大統領にお任せで　あまり警戒心は　アメリカ大衆は　もっていないみたいです。

それでか　成田に着き　検疫官の皆さんが　防インフレ服に身を包んで　現れると　興奮したのか　一般アメリカツアー客は　ETみたいと　明るく話しながらですが　写真を撮り始めていました。検疫官の方もなれたもので　ためらわず　まじめに　作業を続けていました。

外に出て　成田空港ロビーの静けさには　驚きました。
　
はやく　新インフレが治まってくれるといいですね。

The episode, titled “The World's Got Talent,” will feature an interview with Boyle along with a guided tour of her Blackburn, Scotland, home.

Winfrey's production crew descended on Boyle's Blackburn, Scotland, home on Tuesday and spent several hours getting a Boyle-guided tour of the place and interviewing her neighbors.

A struggling cell phone salesman from Wales at the time, Potts became an overnight -- and YouTube -- sensation. And now, two years later, the 38-year-old tenor is relating to Boyle's meteoric rise. "I think Susan demonstrates that anything can happen," said Potts. "There's always something about somebody you don't know that can surprise you."

Potts: I think she should be allowed to change anything she wants. I don't think she should be forced to change anything, but I don't think she should be forced to remain as she was either. Because at the end of the day you have to live with yourself for much longer than the attention that can be on you.

Also there were health reasons. My bottom teeth were being damaged by my upper teeth so something had to be done about it. I still remember the actual dental work being done. I actually had 17 injections to numb me out and I could still feel everything.

Potts: Yeah, I decided if it landed on heads then I'd apply for the show, if it landed on tails then I'd cancel the application I'd prepared. I couldn't decide if I was good enough. ... I knew that I didn't look like somebody who'd stand a remote chance of getting through. And I wondered if I was too old. And so I flipped a coin for that decision.

CNN: Have you kept that coin?
Potts: Nope. I spent it on lunch. How many times I could've put 10 pence on eBay, I don't know.
CNN: Do you ever wonder where it is right now? Because that 10 pence basically changed the course of your life, didn't it?
Potts: It did. I think it started its next journey in a pastry shop two doors down from the shop I was managing.
CNN: You've gone in a more classical direction with your new album, wouldn't you say?
Potts: I think it's slightly more classical than the first one but I think it's still approachable.
I think in the end, music is music. I'm not too precious about divisions in music. I think there's no issue with taking an iconic rock song like "Whiter Shade of Pale" ... and turning it into something a bit more classical.
CNN: You were bullied in school, and music was a source of comfort. Since you've become really famous, have any of those bullies come out of the woodwork and tried to contact you?
Potts: I've had contact with one or two. I had somebody send me a message through a Web site asking for forgiveness. And my reply to them was, "There's nothing to forgive. It's in the past."
I think if you allow negative parts of your life to take over your future then it's like in "Star Wars," really. The dark side wins. So it's important to remain positive about the present and the future and just leave as much of the past behind as possible.
CNN: Is there anything that you miss about being a cell phone salesman?
Potts: Just the camaraderie of the people I worked with. I do keep in touch with them via text message, ironically enough.

NEW YORK -- Dateline NBC last Sunday broadcast "How Lucky Can You Get?," an undercover investigation into lottery sales. The news program said that it obtained lists of top winners from 10 state lotteries and found that in many of those states, lottery retailers, clerks and their relatives are among the biggest winners. It then conducted a sting to find out why.

In Pennsylvania, a Philadelphia retailer cashed eighteen lottery tickets in three months for a total of $45,000, according to the report. In New Jersey, a retailer cashed 105 lottery tickets for more than $236,000. In Illinois, it found one store where four employees and five of their relatives cashed a total of 556 winning tickets, for more than $1,600,000. In California, lottery investigators were seeing the same thing. In fact, in 2007, the five most frequent winners in California were retailers. One store owner in Los Angeles allegedly cashed 121 tickets for more than $160,000.

In many places, customers need to ask the clerk behind the counter to scan the tickets by using the lottery computer. For the show's undercover investigation in California, an investigator entered a store wearing a hidden camera and pretended to be an ordinary customer with a few of scratch-off lottery tickets. He asked the clerk behind the counter to check the tickets for him to see if any of them are winners. Unbeknownst to the clerks, one of the tickets was a guaranteed $1,000 winner, a special scratch-off ticket that the lottery investigators manufactured specifically for this investigation.

The investigator played dumb, going off to shop in the store to give the clerk a chance to be alone when he or she electronically scanned the tickets. The clerk would the face the "moment of truth" of whether to tell the customer that the ticket was a winner.

Also, investigators said that they are beginning to see irregularities that could explain why some of those retailers end up cashing so many winning tickets. Dateline NBC said that it is called discounting. Discounting is when a retailer or a clerk will offer to buy someone's winning ticket from them for a reduced amount, such as $650 for a $1,000 winner, and submit it as a claim for themselves. This often occurs because customers want to avoid going through normal channels because they owe, for example, back taxes, court fees or child support; the state would automatically deduct it from their winnings.

Most of the time, said Dateline NBC, the clerk or owner did the right thing. But at seven stores [out of 50], the clerks told the undercover investigator there were no winners.
