Pre-Invention finished!
For younger ones, they sometimes finish their textbooks in as fast as a few months.Workbooks don't take too long to finish either and they can finish a workbook in range of a few months and a half a year. However, as they progress and their textbooks get harder and more complicated, they can take years to finish. So here's a truly monumental photo since it took her more than 2 years to complete the book! I myself used to use this Pre-Invention textbook. My teacher picked up selected pieces and I never completed the whole book.At that time, I didn't know what Pre-Invention meant, what Invention was, what Baroque era is, who J.S. Bach is. Only I started to teach the piano, I realised how important this textbook is. In preface, an editor of the Pre-Invention wrote:One of practical issues in piano lessons is to develop ears which can identify horizontal melody lines and vertial harmonious lines in music. As well as to comprehendesthetic sence of nuance and mood in music, at the same time, to master mechanical techniques such as finger and/or hands independence that ables a natural performance, then to combine 2 elements in performances. If I read this when I was studying this textbook, I wouldn't have understood a thing, but I also wish I tried to understand what it said.Piano is a unique instrument in a sense that a single player is in charge of (at least) 2 players: melody and accompaniment. Whilst playing, you are required to understand which line is melody and accompaniment, how countermelody intertwines with them. Meanwhile, you also need to think about how you want to shape your music: more melody line, deeper accompaniment, countermelody is harmonious with melody etc..When you can control the sound you create to match with how you want to create the sound, only then it becomes a performance rather than a play through. Inevitably, next question arouses: how do you master such control and how do you "know" what kind of sound you want to create.Solution is rather simple, you need to have an insane amount of good (if not excellent) music.Listening to the music is quintessential, otherwise you wouldn't know how the music could or should sound. However, even if you know how the music should sound, knowing it isn't enough to creating one.So in your daily practice, you go through a process; this music should sound like this then it sounds beautiful - how do you create such sound? - trial and error - build up your own "how to". Pre-Invention is an ideal textbook before proceeding to J.S. Bach's Inventions.Just because you played all the pieces in Pre-Invention wouldn't make you sightread Inventions perfectly, however, playingnumerous pieces written in similar style or in the same era, would be an advantage for sure. This particular pupil have already began working on Invention. According to her, "Pre-Invention was hard enough but Inventions are harder". The fact that she says so with a smile makes me suspect that she is cherishing this new challenge. And I wonder if completing Pre-Invention plays a small part in her to build self-confidence.music en familleではピアノを習いたい生徒さんを募集中です。 I provide piano lessons in English,in Kyoto. If you are interested in taking a class,a trial lesson is available too.
