茶色の色が消えかけた麦藁帽の下からは、二つに分けた
三つ編みの髪が背中まで伸びている。紛れもない真っ赤
な髪の毛だ。

been, but an ordinary observer would have
seen this: A child of about eleven, garbed in
a very short, very tight, very ugly dress of
yellowish-gray wincey.

マシューはその娘を見ていなかった。たとえ見ていた

う。しかし普通の人であれば分かったはずだ。年は11
歳ぐらい。丈の短い服は窮屈そうだし、そのひどい服
の生地は黄ばんで色あせた綿ネルだということを。
