To the west a dark church spire rose up against
a marigold sky. Below was a little valley and
beyond a long, gently-rising slope with snug
farmsteads scattered along it.

西手には夕空に暗い影となった教会の先頭が浮かび上
がり、丘の下手には小さな谷が、その向こうには緩や
かな傾斜の長い坂が続きその両側にこじんまりした農

She opened her eyes and looked about her. They
were on the crest of a hill. The sun had set
some time since, but the landscape was still
clear in the mellow afterlight.

アンは目を開けて辺りを見回した。二人がいるのは
丘の頂上だ。太陽が沈んでかなりときが経っていた
が、それでも柔らかい残照の中で周りの風景ははっ
きりと見ることができる。

"Oh, don't tell me," she interrupted breathlessly,
catching at his partially raised arm and shutting
her eyes that she might not see his gesture. "Let
me guess. I'm sure I'll guess right."

「言わないで」アンは家を指し示そうとするマシューの
手をつかまえ、手の先を見ないように目を閉じ息を弾ま
せながらさえぎった。「想像させて。きっと想像どおり
だと思うの」
