Marilla set the candle on a three-legged,
three-cornered table and turned down the bedclothes.

"I suppose you have a nightgown?" she questioned.

Anne nodded.

three-cornered:三つの隅のある
turn down:折り返す
bedclothes:寝具
nightgown:ねまき
nod:うなずく

足が3本の三角テーブルにローソクを置くと、マリラは
寝具を折り返した。

「寝巻きは持っているね」マリラは訊ねた。

Marilla lighted a candle and told Anne to follow
her, which Anne spiritlessly did, taking her hat
and carpet-bag from the hall table as she passed.
The hall was fearsomely clean; the little gable
chamber in which she presently found herself seemed

still cleaner.

マリラはローソクを点けるとアンについてくるように言っ
た。元気なくマリラのあとからついていくアンは、ホール
テーブルに置いてあった帽子とカーペットバッグを取り上
げる。廊下は驚くほどきれいだった。それにもまして今い
る切妻の小さな部屋はもっときれいだった。

But the spare room was out of the question for
such a stray waif, so there remained only the
east gable room.

spare room:客間,予備の寝室
out of the question:問題外の,とんでもない
stray:はぐれた
waif:浮浪児
gable:切妻

といって浮浪児に客間を使うのは問題外なので、東の
切妻の部屋しかない。
