you! I can see as plain as plain that you want to keep
her." "Well now, she's a real interesting little thing,"
persisted Matthew. "You should have heard her talk coming
from the station."

persist:言い張る

「兄さん、あの子がすっかり気に入ったのね。あの子を置い
ておきたいってはっきり顔に出ているわ」 「そうは言うが
ね、ほんとうに面白い子なんだ」　マシューはさらに言った。
「駅からの道々、あの子が話すの聞かせたかったよ」

"I should say not. What good would she be to us?"

"We might be some good to her," said Matthew suddenly
and unexpectedly.

「置いておくべきではないと思うわ。私たちにあの子がな
んの役に立つというの」

「わしらがあの子の役に立つかもしれんよ」突然マシュー
が予想もしないことを言った。

"Well, now, no, I suppose not--not exactly," stammered
Matthew, uncomfortably driven into a corner for his
precise meaning. "I suppose--we could hardly be
expected to keep her."

precise:ぴったりの,ちょうどその

「いや、そうじゃなくって、はっきりとそうというわけじゃ
なく」自分が何を言ったかに気づいたマシューは、返答に困っ
てどもりながら言った。「あの子を置いておくのは無理だろ
うね」
