"You mean, hateful boy!" she exclaimed passionately.
"How dare you!"

And then--thwack! Anne had brought her slate down
on Gilbert's head and cracked it--slate not head--
clear across.

mean:意地悪な
passionately:激しく,激怒して
thwack:～をピシャリと打つ
crack:割る
clear:きれいな
across:十字形に交差して

「意地悪で、憎らしい子！」怒りに震えながらアンは叫んだ。
「よくもこんなことを！」

そう言って－－バン！　アンは自分の石板をギルバートの頭
に打ち下ろし割ってしまった－－頭ではなく石板だが－－見
事に十字に割れた。

Then Anne looked at him with a vengeance!

She did more than look. She sprang to her feet, her
bright fancies fallen into cureless ruin. She flashed
one indignant glance at Gilbert from eyes whose angry
sparkle was swiftly quenched in equally angry tears.

ガラと崩れ、アンはさっと立ち上がった。怒りに燃えた目
でギルバートをにらんだが、怒りの炎がたちまちのうちに
消えると、その怒りは涙となって現れた。

Gilbert reached across the aisle, picked up the end
of Anne's long red braid, held it out at arm's length
and said in a piercing whisper:

"Carrots! Carrots!"

pick up:手に取る
braid:お下げ髪
piercing:鋭い,つんざく

ギルバートは通路越しに手を伸ばし、長い赤毛のお下げ髪の
先っぽをつかんだ。そして伸ばした腕で髪をつかんだまま、
小声だが突き刺すように言った：

「ニンジン、ニンジン！」
