Gilbert reached across the aisle, picked up the end
of Anne's long red braid, held it out at arm's length
and said in a piercing whisper:

"Carrots! Carrots!"

pick up:手に取る
braid:お下げ髪
piercing:鋭い,つんざく

ギルバートは通路越しに手を伸ばし、長い赤毛のお下げ髪の
先っぽをつかんだ。そして伸ばした腕で髪をつかんだまま、
小声だが突き刺すように言った：
