"What are you taking all those things home for, Anne?"
Diana wanted to know, as soon as they were out on
the road. She had not dared to ask the question before.

「何もかもどうして家に持って帰るの、アン」ダイアナは
理由を知りたがった。学校を出るまでは我慢していたが、
道路に出るとすぐにダイアナは尋ねた。

When school went out Anne marched to her desk,
ostentatiously took out everything therein, books
and writing tablet, pen and ink, testament and
arithmetic, and piled them neatly on her cracked
slate.

その日の授業が終わるとアンは自分の机に戻り、これ見

ンとインク、それに聖書と算数の本も、すべてひび割れ
た石板の上にきちんと重ねた。

Once, when nobody was looking, Gilbert took from his
desk a little pink candy heart with a gold motto on
it, "You are sweet," and slipped it under the curve
of Anne's arm. Whereupon Anne arose, took the pink
heart gingerly between the tips of her fingers, dropped
it on the floor, ground it to powder beneath her heel,
and resumed her position without deigning to bestow
a glance on Gilbert.

誰も見ていないときに一度、ギルバートが机から小さなハー

とアンの肘の内側に滑り込ませた。するとアンは立ち上がる
とそのピンクのハートを指先で慎重につまみ、床に落として
かかとで粉々にすりつぶし、元の姿勢に戻った。その間、ギ
ルバートの方を見向きもしない。
