本日 (令和4年 [2022年] 1月9日 [日曜日]) に始まった大相撲一月場所では、王鵬 (おうほう) 関 (大嶽 [おおたけ] 部屋) が新入幕を果たしました。彼は昭和の大横綱である大鵬 (たいほう) 関の孫として知られています。
In the Ozumo January Basho (大相撲一月場所), which began today (Sunday, January 9, Reiwa 4 [2022]), Oho (王鵬関) (Ohtake Stable [大嶽部屋]) is a rikishi newly promoted to the makunouchi division (新入幕). He is known as a grandson of Taiho (大鵬関), one of the best-known and highest-achieving yokozuna (横綱: the highest rank for rikishi) of the Showa era (昭和時代).
今場所の王鵬関の番付は東前頭18枚目です。前頭は普通16枚目、多くても17枚目までなので、これは珍しい番付です。
Oho's rank in this basho is east maegashira 18 (東前頭18枚目). This is an unusual level because the maegashira rank has usually 16 levels (16枚), or 17 (17枚) at most.
私は数年前に国技館の通路で王鵬関 (当時の四股名は苗字の「納谷」 [なや]) が、お客さんとの記念撮影に快く応じる姿を見てから、「早く関取になってほしい」と思っていました。彼は関取になり、そして幕内力士になったので、嬉しく思っています。
A few years ago in the corridors of the Kokugikan (国技館 [National Sumo Arena in Ryogoku, Tokyo]), I saw Oho (his ringname [四股名] at the time was "Naya" [納谷], which is his real surname) happily have a picture taken with a spectator. From that time, I wanted him to be promoted to a sekitori (関取: salaried rikishi). I am happy that he became a sekitori and is now in the makunouchi division.
