I find something noble and courageous in Japan's resilience and perseverance, and it will be on display in the coming days. This will also be a time when the tight knit of Japan’s social fabric, its toughness and resilience, shine through. And my hunch is that the Japanese will, by and large, work together. something of a contrast to the polarization and bickering and dog-eat-dog model of politics now on display from Wisconsin to Washington. So maybe we can learn just a little bit from Japan. In short, our hearts go out to Japan, and we extend our deepest sympathy for the tragic quake. But also, our deepest admiration.

Part 22. 仮定法を整理してみた
地震前に書いたが、朝忙しいときのために取っといたブログだよん。
前に話したウダクダシュダ
の前段階である仮定法。
大まかには2種類。今回はその使い方をマスターしましょう。
IF「もし～なら」 と WHEN「～したら」
WISH ～「もし～だったらなぁ」と、WONDER IF ～「～かしら、～かなぁ」
どちらも前者の仮定法は曲者ですよね。
まだ実際には起きていないことを話すのがこの仮定法。
後者の場合は仮定法ではなく、時間的な制約か、推測かに分かれます。
WHEN は、日本語では、IF と似た響きになるので入れてみました。
(1)IF で条件を指定する （本文を助ける副文と考えます）
条件付けは単純ですが、本文での表現はいろいろ変わります。
基本的に IF の仮定法では、時制の一致は気にしなくていいことになっています。
文が現在のことか過去か？
文が現実的なことか非現実的なことか？
まだ起こってないこと＝非現実
まだだけど、起こりうること＝現実的
①現実的な仮定
信号が赤だったら渡ってはいけない。
If the signal is red, do not cross the street.
（すべて現実的なこと、しかも when に置換え可能）
あのコートが高すぎるようなら、買わない
If that coat is too expensive, I won't buy (it).
（どちらも現実的。買わない、が未来形に注目）
サラダを食べ始めたいんだけど、もし君さえよければ。
I'd like to start digging my salad if you don't mind.
（現実的。時制の一致はない。would like = want ）
⇒オフィスに着いたら電話します。
When I get to my office I will call you.
（仮定ではなく、単なる時間的条件）
彼女がパーティに来ないなら、僕は行かない
If she doesn't come to the party, I wouldn't go either.
（条件が原形。本文が、僕は行かない、という意思のwouldに注目）
②非現実的な仮定
自分が犬だと思ってみてください（＝仮定してみてください）
Suppose if you were a dog.
（非現実的な仮定＝過去形を用いる）
犬だったら何だってんだい？
What if I were a dog?
（非現実的な仮定。過去形を用いる was = were ）
②－２ 条件が非現実的なとき
後の文に無条件に would, could を使うといい
⇒彼女がもし来たとしても、僕は行かないだろう
If she were coming to the party, I wouldn't go.
（was=were 非現実的な条件。彼女は来そうにない、という響き）
→なので Even たとえ～だとしても、というニュアンス
もし僕が君だったら彼の下で働いてるだろうな。
I would work for him if I were you.
（どちらも非現実的。would = will の時制一致 ）
→「彼の下で働く」のは一見現実的なようだが、まだ起こってないし、
条件があってこそのこと。なので非現実的となる
もし君がコンテストで受かってたら、今頃人生は違っていたかもしれない
If you won the contest, your life could have been different now..
（どちらも非現実的。条件付けは過去のことだが本文は今のこと）
⇒もし君がコンテストに受かってたら、今頃いっしょに働いてないだろう。
If you won the contest then, we wouldn't be working together now.
（非現実と現実＝ありそうなことのミックス）
③Should の使い方に注意
⇒万が一君がコンテストに受かるとしたら世界も終わりだね
If you should win the contest, the world would end.
（should はかなり非現実的な条件に使います）
⇒もし病気になったら医者にすぐ診てもらいなさい。
Should you get sick, see your doctor immediately.
＝If you get sick, see your doctor immediately.
（Should you は、もし～だったら という単純仮定）
(2)願いをいう Wish ～だったらなぁ…
内容が非現実的な場合、後の文で IF のような仮定法を用います。
ああ明日仕事休みだといいのに
I wish I were free from work tomorrow.
（実際には休みではないので非現実的）
あなたといっしょに行けるといいんだけど
I wish I could go with you.
（現在のこと）
⇒あなたといっしょに行けてたらよかったんだけど
I wish I could have gone with you.
（過去のこと）
(3)疑問・推測の Wonder if ～かなぁ、～かしら…
①この if は whether と同じで、～かどうかという意味で使い、
仮定法ではあリません。
それお好きかしら。
I wonder if you like it (or not).
= I wonder whether you like it or not.
彼はほんとのことを言ってたのかしら
I wonder if he said the truth.
= I doubt if he said the truth.
すいませんが、お手伝いしていただけないでしょうか
I was wondering if you could help me.
≒ Could you help me, please?
≒ I would like you to help me.
②ついでに５Ｗ１Ｈもやっておきましょう。
君はいつ来るんだろう
I wonder when you come.
その学校はどこにあるんだろう
I wonder where the school is.
次は何が起こるんだろう
I wonder what's happening next.
いったいこれは誰なんだろう
I wonder who the hell this is.
なんで彼女はそれが好きじゃないんだろう
I wonder why she doesn't like it.
どうやって君はそれを成し遂げたんだろう
I wonder how you made it happen.
もし大地震が起こったら…という最悪の IF が起こりました。
自分たちも何ができるんだろう、と考え、
できることは何でもしてサポートできたらいいな…と思います。

今回は（も？）せっきょくさいかも…
昔、革命前にフランスの女王が言ったとか言わなかったとか…。
今日昼ごろ通った地下商店街では、菓子パンのケースが空でした。
その2件先の100円ケーキのケースは商品いろいろ。
これを見て、つい思い出したマリーアントワネット。
でもある意味、このせりふは今のような時には的を得ているかもしれません。
もちろんオリジナルの意味は、世間知らずなものですが、
米がなければパスタ、それもなければうどん、それもなければスイトン？
ものがないときにはひとつに固執せず、他のモノにチャレンジするチャンス。
普段は考えたこともないスイトンだってやってみれば味噌味もあり、コンソメ風味あり、ニョッキ風あり、と
いろいろ美味しくいただけます。
まさにピンチはチャンス。そうして進化してきた種族なんですから、この際、さらに進化することをお勧めします。自分は買い占めた後で、やれ安心、と思ってる人にはわからない工夫する満足感が味わえます。
モノがそろってない不安感は、原始からの空腹への恐怖です。
ストレスや不安を食べ物や買い物で置き換える現代の療法でもありますから、それを必要とする衝動や欲求＝Urge(ｱｰｼﾞ)を感じる人たちには仕方のないこと。責めることはできません。それを責める人たちを責めるブログが出るという悪循環も生まれています。断ち切りましょう。
食べ盛りのお子さんがいるから、というのもほんとの理由ではありません。
おなかがすくことを教える1日があり、食べられる感謝を教えるのもいいチャンス。
現在、ほんとの寒さや飢えに苦しんでない、被災地以外の人に与えられた、生活を精神的にも豊かにする、または今の生活の豊かさを実感できるまたとないチャンス。こんなときにしかできるものじゃありません。
いつもより1枚余計に着て、寒さ対策をすることで、いつもなら油断して風邪をひいてた人が、首元や足元の防寒で救われる事だってあるかも。3分の体操であったかくなり、免疫機能もがぜん張り切るかもしれません。
湯たんぽのぬくぬくに出会ういい機会でもあります。
テレビのかわいそうな人たちを見てかわいそうに思うだけではなく、もう1歩進んだ協力が求められています。
ぜひ原始的な恐怖を克服して、強い人間になってもらいたいなぁ、と願います。
生活を工夫することは脳にもいい影響を与えます。
いつも使わない右脳で恐怖や防衛意識を高め、その対処に左脳を使います。
海馬も全力疾走するかもしれません。普通でも1割使わないかもしれない脳を活用するチャンス。今恵まれてる人には、英語で言うチャンス＝chance ＝いちかばちかを賭ける余裕があります。平和ボケした五感を磨き、体を活性化するいい機会です。チャンス＝機会＝opportunity ももらえて支援に協力もできる一挙両得を放っておく手はありません。
あなたがひとつで我慢したものが次の人へ。次の人が買うはずだったものが次の人へ。
そうして東北の人たちへとモノが回ってくれることを、今は強く祈ります。
石油に関してはサウジも増量をオファーしてくれています。電車も走ってます。蓮訪大臣の言うとおり、モノも入荷し続けます。だから買占めは必要ありません。工夫を楽しみながら、困ってる人も助けましょう。
楽しめない人は続けられないでしょうから、お金で解決できます。そんな便利な世の中です。
その便利さを実感できない人たちが今、少なくとも45万人います。
もう実感できなくなった人たちが1週間で1万5千人います。
長期にわたる支援です。自分の中にも何か楽しみや意義を見出して、工夫してみましょう。
先が真っ暗な中で、いやおうなく走らされる被災地の皆さんの伴走者になりましょう。
前回の追記でも書きましたが、幸せな人はそれを分け合おうとする。
不幸な人や罪悪感のある人はそれを広めようとする。
まずは自分から、ですよね。

英訳・The voice echoed away in Tsunami

Miki Endo, 25 year old woman in Miyagi who was a town office worker
in an emergency administration department, continued announcing the Tsunami warning
until she too was swallowed and swept away by the 40 feet high flood.
There are still 10,000 people missing out of 17,000 in this town after the earthquakes and Tsunamis. She is one of them.
" Please run, run for the higher place ! " she screamed through the microphone.
She wouldn't have known the three story building of the town office was about to be torn by floods, or she might have known but put her priority on saving other people
in her sight.
" She must have been exerting all her strength to do her job until the end."
Miki's mother told the writer in tears.
One of Miki's colleagues who survived from the floods by holding onto the radio antenna told her mother that he had seen she was being washed away by sea water.
She gave up her hope then.
Ms. Houga, a friend of her mother was driving away from the flood
while she was hearing Miki's voice from the speakers behind.
Being chased by water, finally she outraced and arrived at the shelter.
And she met Miki's mother there.
After a while, she told Mrs Endo,
" I could hear your daughter's voice behind until the building vanished in the flood."
Looking down the town from the hill, there were none but the dark stream.

そこで今回はこのHAVEをわかりやすく分けてみましたよ。
(1)持っている、というイメージ
①～がある（⇔がない）
権利がある have the right
時間がある have time
お金がある have money
才能がある have a talent
癖がある have a habit
信頼がある have a confidence
（よく自信がある、と訳されますが、その場合 in myself のように自分を表す
言葉が必要なので、形容詞を使います＝I'm confident)
②～である（⇔～ではない）
青い目である have blue eyes
有利である have an advantage
③～がいる（⇔～はいない））
子供がいる have some kids
カレシがいる have a boyfriend
お客がいる have a visitor
(1)－２ 後から来る名詞の意味合いでhaveのニュアンスが変わる
①～がよい（いいものを持っている）
記憶力がよい have a good memory
評判がよい have a reputation
②～が悪い（悪いものを持っている）
本の評判が悪い it has a bad review
システムが悪い it has a notorious system
③～をする（しばしば動詞にもなる名詞を伴う）
風呂に入る have a bath
タバコを吸う have a smoke
休みをとる have a break
見てみる have a look
発表する have a say
座る have a seat
食事をする have a meal
④～が起こる
発作が起きた I had a seizure
地震があった we had an earthquake
(2)～した状態、を持つイメージ
①～してもらう （後に人を伴って主語＋動詞）
≒GET よりやわらかい表現になります。
髪をを切ってもらう have him cut my hair （彼が私の髪を切る）
教えてもらう have him teach me （彼が私に教える）
②～される（名詞に受身の過去分詞をつけて）
≒受身のBE動詞のように主語を変える必要がありません。
時計を盗まれる I have my watch stolen
息子が殺される I have my son killed
③～させる
≒MAKE よりやわらかい表現です。
ここに来させる（原形） have him come here
私を笑わせている（進行形） have me laughing
運転できるようにしてやろう（進行形未来） have you driving
④～してしまう（名詞に過去分詞を伴って）
宿題を終えてしまう have my homework done
⑤～の状態にする
コーヒーを用意する have coffee ready
本を返す have a book back
歯を抜いてもらう have my tooth out
シャツを中に入れる have my shirt in (my pants)
机に手を置く have my hand on a desk
1日休みをとる have a day off
⑥この(2)のパートは現在・過去完了形で苦しんでる人にも役立ちます。
（have ＋過去分詞の完了形は、もともと～した状態を持つ、と解釈）
I have passed the exam !
試験に受かった！（状態にある、ということ）
It had fallen down on the street.
通りににそれは倒れていた（状態にあった、ということ）
①から③までどうやって違いを出すんだという指摘がありましたが、
会話の前後関係で判断して、さほど支障なく使われています。
誤解を招きたくない場合は、≒で表した使役動詞に置き換えます。
(3)特殊な意味

やつらを打ち負かさないと！

シェアするということ 東北の大地震から
最近では日本語でも「シェアする(=share)」という言葉が徐々に浸透してきて、聞く機会が多いです。
市場での占有率を表すシェアは有名ですが、この占有や自分の取り分、分担という名詞より
ぜんぜん意義のある言葉がシェアするという動詞。
分け合う、共有するという意味で、日常でもレスランで注文した料理をシェアしたり、
本当にいろいろな場面で使われますよね。
英語圏ででも同じです。
今回の大地震でこの言葉の大切さに出会うことが何度もありました。
やっとメールで連絡のとれた福島の知人は、津波注意報直後から避難生活が始まりましたが、
あまり時間の余裕もなく、持ち出すものを考える心のゆとりもなかったそうです。
避難所へは10人という数で1台の車をシェアしたそうです。
2日目になっても水や食料の供給は間に合わず、1人1個のおにぎりと水といったところも多かったようです。
そんな中、避難所で近くにいたもの同士で、やっと持ち出してきたパンやお菓子を分けてあげる光景を何度も目にしたそうです。みんなに分けてあげる余裕もなかったでしょうが、それでも一人占めすることがないんですね。明日は何が食べられるかわからない状況で、自分の食べ物をシェアするというのは、きっとかなり勇気がいることですが、そんな勇気など思いつかないうちにシェアしている方々の話を聞いて、ほんとに感動しました。
彼らがシェアするのは食べ物や毛布だけではありません。
情報のシェアが何より大事で、会う人ごとに知人の安否を尋ねたり、地震や原発についての新しいニュースを口から口へ伝えていったそうです。何も知らないでいる恐ろしさは、すでに知った事実よりもっと怖いからです。
そして不便な生活空間や時間をシェア。濡れたままの服で風呂にも入れなければ、冬とはいえ、かなり気になることでしょう。テレビには出にくいトイレや生理用品のことなど、すべてのプライバシーも彼らはシェアすることになります。緊急時とはいえ、これも不安になる大きな要素です。
そしてその不安や恐怖という精神的な苦しみのシェア。これを少しでも軽くするためにワシらにできるのが負担のシェアです。これもすべて分け合うことです。
このように英語のシェアはさまざまな場合や物事に使える、とてもいい言葉です。
不思議なのはあまり「お金を分け合う」ことには使わないこと。
それにはスペア(=spare)をよく使います。
Could you spare some money.
(少し恵んでくれないか）
Spare me some of your sorrow.
（君の悲しみを少し分けてくれ）
このようにスペアはどちらかといえば一方通行。
共有という相互通行の意味合いが強いシェアという言葉、ぜひこの機会に覚えて、
みんなでシェアしてみませんか？

後記
自然災害でいろいろなものや家族知人を失う悲しさは、自然には怒れないので、ときとして人への怒りにすり変わります。救助や復興を指揮する方々や政府へそれをぶつけようと思うかもしれませんが、誰もがいっぱいっぱいのところで働いてると思いますので、どうせ耐えなければならないのなら、前向きにみんなでがんばってほしい。そう願わずにいられません。

まず覚えること多い。もう多いなんてもんじゃない。超範囲広い。
「中学必修英単語
600語くらい？」
とか、もう、そういうレベルじゃない。
何しろ英和で46万語、和英で48万語。スゲェ！なんか1日10語とかじゃ無理なの。
しかも文法もあるらしい。ヤバイよ、文法だよ。
だって日本語の文法だってちゃんとわかってないじゃん。そっから英語にするんだから困るじゃん。長文とかになったら困るっしょ。
だから始めは気にしない。ハローとかサンキューとかわかるヤツからだ。
けど英語はそっからがヤバイ。挨拶なんてすぐ終わっちゃう。ヤバすぎ。
いろんな文がくっついて、本とかスピーチになるくらい長くなる。膨張しまくり。
46万語って言ったけど、ほんとに必要なのは何千語くらいかもしんない。
じゃあ2000語ってことにすると
「じゃあその必修英単語って何よ？」
ってことになるし、
それは実ははっきり決まってない。ヤバイ。決まってないなんて凄すぎる。
あと超種類多い。方言とかオージー訛りとかそういうもんじゃない。シングリッシュ
だのジャパングリッシュだのグローピッシュ
。ヤバイ。多すぎ。
人名だのイニシャルだけだのチャット用語だの。怖い。
それに しゃべる人口が超多い。公用語だったり第2国語だったり、英語が特別扱い受けてる国は75カ国。7億5千万人。億人とか平気で出てくる。
億人て。小学生でも言わねぇか、最近。
なんつっても中国人とインド人が凄い。ほとんど無限に近い数だし。
人口で言うと、約１3億と１０億人。ヤバイ。グローバル化
でドンドン英語習ってる。
うちらなんてしゃべれたらちょっとかっこいいなんて思っただけで、参考書買ったり。英会話学校に行ってみたり、ネイティブ発音にこだわったりいろいろ。
でもヤツらはぜんぜん平気。英語はコミュの道具と割り切って使ってる。
訛りなんて気にしない。凄い。ヤバイ。
うちらだってネットとかで外人とも和が広がったりして。
そいでちょっとでも通じるようになればうれしくってかなりヤバイ。
とにかく貴様ら、英語のヤバさをもっと知るべきだと思います。

フィレンツェのドゥーモ
All Roads Lead to Rome
It was last autumn.
My wife and I traveled around Italy for two weeks.
We flew into Rome first and stayed there for three days,
doing all those sight seeings again.
The first week went really fun and romantic even after arriving in Florence.
Then, for silly reason, we had an argument.
She wanted to stay in Florence a few more days
since she was a bit tired and also she really liked Florence.
So she wanted to walk around the city and feel the atmosphere freely.
Freely? So be it.
I had arranged the rest of the travel already,
to go to Milan and Venice in one week.
How can we stay in Florence for a few more days....?
She can relax in Milan if she wants to.
Probably there are not much to see besides the Duomo anyway.
She neither changed her mind nor her mood in spite of my plan.
OK, I will go by myself. You will stay here alone and enjoy yourself.
She has no problem with speaking Italian and spending her own money.
I had no worry indeed.
So here I was.
Alone and a bit shaky because I did not speak Italian at all.
I took my share of bags to the train station and bought a ticket to Milan.
From the beginning of my trip, there was a problem.
No one in the station seem to speak English.
Is this the famous city for tourists around the world?
Anyway I took out my Italian guidebook and looked up the phrase
which means, where is a train to Milan.
"Dove è il treno per Milano?"
"Per favore va' diritto"
Go straight ?
There are number of tracks in front of me.
At which track should I wait?
So I asked so many people the same question.
Finally I saw the train coming into the platform.
After I got in a car, I looked for a seat, but all of them were already taken.
I had no choice so I placed my suitcase near the exit door
and settled down in the cozy space.
I just couldn't stand all up to Milan which would be for more than two hours.
After an hour of silence and passing view of Italian suburb,
a guy in a group gathering around me started talking to me.
"Sei un giapponese?"
"Si. I'm Japanese. I don't speak much of Italian."
"Oh, do you Karate?"
How do they know I learned it a little?
They seem to believe all of Japanese men are masters of Karate.
They started smiling and nodding to each other.
These guys were sort of young around 20 or so,
and each of them had a big muscles with a big bag down on the floor.
I had no choice talking with them since I couldn't move from there
surrounded by Italian macho guys on a train.
Fortunately they didn't understand English well either
so it took some time for them to understand what I said
and the same took for me to understand what they must have said.
"Show me body."
"Hu? Oh my biceps? "
Body means body, but he meant my bicep by touching his own.
OK, Maybe they are not gay.
I bent my arms and showed my bicep from the t-shirts.
They seemed to be impressed and cried wooooo.
I felt a bit embarrassed by being stared at,
but they seemed no harm or tease about it.
Then we talked about the various forms of Karate
and how to fight in competitions and so on.
Since they took me a little bigger than life, I didn't tell them
that I learned it when I was a high school student.
Soon I found out they were also learning Karate,
and now they were on a way back to Rome, they said.
Haha, you guys are kidding me. This train goes for Milan.
Milano? hahaha... They are laughing.
They must be teasing me. Why did I listen to the Italian macho schmucks.
I repeated the same Italian I just learned today.
"Questo confine di treno è per Milano?"
"No, this go Roma."
I had a very bad feeling that they might be right here.
I did not remember seeing this train pass the Genova which is on a way to Milan.
And the view I see now, getting closer and closer, is somehow familiar to me.
The train finally stopped at, the Rome station.
Here I was back again to Rome instead of going to Milan.
I had no idea how I could have made such a simple mistake yet unbelievable.
All my energy seem to be deflating out of me now.
I wondered why no one came to check the ticket on a train
so he or she could tell me I was on a wrong train earlier.
Anyway, I had no intention to spend one more night in Rome,
so I hurried to the train which definitely goes back to Florence this time
I came back to the hotel where my wife kept a room at that night.
She was rather surprised to see me and asked.
"What happened? Didn't you go to Milan?"
Well, I explained what happened to me today,
and apologized her to ask her to let me stay with her.
We left for Milan a day after that and enjoyed
the rest of travel without any more arguing.

それからつまらないことで言い合いになった。
彼女はもう2,3日フィレンツェに泊まりかった。少し疲れてたし、フィレンツェが気に入ったからだ。
町をぶらついたりしてその雰囲気を自由に味わいたいという。
自由に？ ならそうすればいい。
ワシは残りの日程もすでに手配してあった。1週間でミラノとヴェニスへ行く予定だ。
だからもう2,3日フィレンツェに泊まるなんて。リラックスだっったらミラノでもできる。
どうせドゥオーモ以外はそんなに見るもんもない。
ワシの計画にもかかわらず、彼女は決心も気分も変えようとしなかった。
ＯＫ，じゃあひとりで行く。お前はここに一人で残って楽しんでれば。
彼女はイタリア語には困らないし、お金も持ってる。
心配することはなかった。
さてそこでワシだ。
ひとり武者震いしてるのはイタリア語が話せないからだ。
自分の分の荷物を持って駅へ行き、ミラノ行きのチケットを買った。
でも一人旅の始まりから問題が。
ここでは誰も英語を話さない。世界きっての観光名所なのに？
とにかくイタリアのガイドブックを取り出して、言葉を捜す。
ミラノ行きの電車はどこですか？
まっすぐ行けって？
目の前にはホームがたくさん並んでる。
どのホームですか？
この質問をたくさんの人に投げた。
そしてやっとその電車がホームへ入ってくるのが見えた。
車内に入り、あいた席を探したがどれもあいてない。
しかたなく、入り口近くにスーツケースを置き、こじんまりとしたその場所に落ち着くことにした。
ミラノまでの2時間を立ったままで行くことはできない。
1時間ほどの沈黙と飛んでゆくイタリア郊外の景色の後、
ワシの周りに集まっていたグループの男が話しかけて来た。
日本人かい？
はい、日本人です。イタリア語はあんまり話せません。
おー空手できる？
どうしてちょっと習ったことあるの知ってるんだろう。
たぶん日本の男はみんな空手の達人とでも思ってるんだろう。
彼らはニコニコしながらお互いうなづきあっている。
そいつらは若く見え、20歳そこそこのようだった。
それぞれすごい筋肉で大きなバッグを足元に置いていた。
話をしないわけにはいかない、だってそこからもう動けないから。
電車の中でこんなにでかい男たちに囲まれてては。
さいわい彼らも英語はそれほどわからず、わしの言うことがわかるのに時間がかかったし、
ワシもむこうの言おうとしてることを理解するのに手間取った。
「体を見せて」
「は？ ああ二の腕か」
体は体だが、自分の力こぶを触りながら彼の言ったのは二の腕のことだとわかった。
ＯＫ、ゲイではないんだろう。
ワシは腕を曲げて、Ｔシャツから力こぶを見せてやった。
彼らは一応感心したようにおーっと叫んだ。
じろじろ見られて恥ずかしかったが別に害があるわけでもからかってるわけでもないようだ。
それからワシらは、空手のいろんな型や試合での戦い方など話した。
ワシのことを実際よりスゴイと思ってるようなんで、高校の時にやってただけということは言わなかった。
それから彼らも空手をやってると知り、今はローマへ帰るところだという。
はは、またからかって～。この電車はミラノ行きだよ。
ミラノ？ははは、と彼らは笑っている。
やっぱりからかってるんだ。
何でこんなイタリアのマッチョバカの言うこと聞いてたんだろう。
今日覚えたばかりのイタリア語でもう1度訊いた。
「この電車はミラノ行きですか」
「違う、これはローマ行きだ」
この時点で、ワシはもしかしたらこいつらの方が正しいかもというやーな予感がしてきた。
ミラノへ行く途中にあるはずのジェノバを見た覚えがないからだ。
そして今見えてる眺めが近くなるにつれ、なんとなく見覚えのあるものに…。
電車はついにローマ駅に着いた。
そうそしてワシはミラノへ行く代わりに再びローマに。
自分でもこんな単純で信じられないミスをするなんて思わなかった。
すべての力が抜け出ていくような感じ。
なんで車内で誰かチケットを見回りに来て、間違った電車に乗ったと教えてくれなかったのか不思議だった。
とにかくまたひと晩ローマで過ごす気はない。
だから今度こそ間違えないようにフィレンツェ行きの汽車へと急いだ。
その晩のうちに、奥さんがそのまま泊まってるホテルの部屋へと帰ってきた。
彼女はちょっとびっくりして言った。
「どうしたの？ミラノへ行ったんじゃなかったの？」
そう、ワシは今日何があったかを説明して、謝ってここに泊めてくれるよう頼んだ。
ワシらはミラノへその2日後にたち、そのままけんかもせず、残りの旅行を楽しんだ。
