"Mrs. Spencer said that my tongue must be hung
in the middle. But it isn't--it's firmly fastened
at one end. Mrs. Spencer said your place was
named Green Gables. I asked her all about it.

「スペンサーさんは、私の舌が根っこから外れてあちこ
ちうろついているんじゃないか、と言うんだけど、そん
なことはないです。しっかりとくっついています。マシュー
さんの家はグリーンゲーブルと呼ばれているんですね。
スペンサーさんからすっかり聞きました。

"Oh, you can talk as much as you like. I don't
mind."

"Oh, I'm so glad. I know you and I are going
to get along together fine. It's such a relief
to talk when one wants to and not be told
that children should be seen and not heard.
I've had that said to me a million times
if I have once. And people laugh at me
because I use big words. But if you have
big ideas you have to use big words to
express them, haven't you?"

"Well now, that seems reasonable," said Matthew.

「ああ、好きなだけ話していいよ、気にしないから」

「うれしいわ。マシューさんとはうまくやっていけ
ると思ってたの。話したいときに話せるとほっとする
わ。子どもは側にいるのはいいけど話しては駄目って
言われないのっていいわね。一度そんなことをしたら
嫌になるほど叱られたわ。おまけに言い方が大げさだっ
て笑うの。壮大な考えを表現するには、難しい言葉を
使わなくちゃ無理だと思いません？」

「う～ん、筋は通ってるね」マシューは返事をした。

But this freckled witch was very different, and
although he found it rather difficult for his
slower intelligence to keep up with her brisk
mental processes he thought that he "kind of
liked her chatter." So he said as shyly as usual:

freckled:そばかすのある
witch:若い女(俗)
keep up with:～について行く
brisk:活発な
mental processes:心の動き,頭の回転
kind of:やや,なんだか

なのにこのそばかすの顔をした子は全然違う。この子
の次々と話題を変える頭の回転には自分のゆっくりと
した頭がついていくのは大変だけど、「この子のおしゃ
べりはちょっと好き」だなっとマシューは感じていた。
だから、おずおずとこう言った。
