To Mr. Daisuke Tanigaki,
I wanted to personally thank you for giving the lecture for Jacob Chan's class last week. At one point you mentioned that if you could get through to one person and change their outlook that the lecture would be worthwhile, and I just wanted to let you know that your insight really did effect me. Your message was largely in contrast to the normal information we are fed at this school, and I am relieved to learn that a successful practicing architect such as yourself can have such an open and relaxed view of the profession.
I would like to pose a question to you that I did not have a chance to ask during your lecture. You mentioned that you were always bringing your own inspiration to a project. I would be very interested to know what specific kinds of things inspire you in your work, and also if your non-architectural views on life influence the actual design of architectural projects.
I truly appreciate your taking the time to speak with us. Thanks again.
Leanne D.

I really like and appreciate 2 lectures that we had with Daisuke. Those were one of the best and helpful lectures that I had in school. It was not one of those regular lectures that architects stand and talk about their project explaining their concept with diagrams and drawing that are most of the time impossible to understand from first look. It takes lot of time observations in order to understand those lectures. And those lectures are most of the time just make those architects look good and show off their work without helping students. They are not telling what to do in order to be successful. Those two lectures were different from other lectures because they explain the real staff. Those lectures thought about how to work study and manage time in order to become successful in whatever we do. The organization of the slides was very simple but at the same time very powerful. Just few words or one sentence very often tell more that paragraphs. I appreciate the architects not talking about architectural concept and instead giving us all those helpful information about time management, importance of group work and personal life. I'll be 100% honest by saying that after those lectures I do lot of staff differently and the positive difference is obvious. - Sarmen M.

i liked the lecture because it was a change of pace from all the other lectures that architects usually give. jacob is right when he calls architects prima donnas. they love to brag about their own work that gives the lecture little substance. Dais lectures was more interesting than most other lectures i've gone to. i believe the lecture was very beneficial to hear and would help out a great deal in future endeavors. i think that it might help me with time management. -Phong L.
Jacob,
I want to thank you for asking Daisuke to come and share their knowledge with us. It was really refreshing and it made me at ease. Sometimes it gets a little difficult with architecture school when other parts of your life demand your attention and the way they spoke about balancing life and the tips they gave really encouraged me. I just appreciate everything they shared with us. I kind of wish that some of our professors were as cool as the speakers~ Sometimes us students just need encouragement and guidance from our professors to help us move forward with whatever it is we are doing. Daisuke was just really generous. Thank you again, - Lorik

I thought the lecture series by Daisuke was very informative and inspirational from a life lessons standpoint. It was refreshing to hear an architect’s experience of the field and motivational to learn to focus on your life and what you really aspire for through and outside of architecture. The lecture series forced me to analyze my own life; and to change the way I execute projects and prioritize my life. There were a few quotes that I admire from Daisuke and that I plan to use in my own life;
“Efficiency is doing things right… Effectiveness is doing the right thing.”
“Design your own lifestyle”
“Good design comes from happy designers”
AND…The Pareto Principal: “For many events 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes”
Overall, I really appreciated the lecture. In architecture school we are not taught how the impact of work environment and the stresses of architecture in the end compromise our personal lives… Dais’ guidelines and personal experiences will definitely help when I conduct the rest of my educational career and professional life. - Chelsea C.

Daisuke Tanigaki Lecture
The lectures from the past week have changed how I view architecture. Throughout my time in architecture school I believed that architecture was about spending time and working hard. I believed that the more time I spent on something, the better it would be. Mr. Daisuke Tanigaki explained that although architecture is about working hard, spending a lot of time on something doesn’t make it better. Dais says that being effective is much more important that being efficient and architects need to focus more on doing well, quality work. What I take from these lectures is that I need to make time for myself and my family while making very good use of my allotted work time in order to make my work of high quality. These lectures made me think of how instead of spending 20 hours on one design maybe I can spend 6 hours on three designs and how these may be better because I am more creative when I am being effective with my time. - Rigoberto D.

I wanted to thank you for inviting Dias, his lecture was good not only for architecture but for life. His inspirational talk gives hope during a time where jobs in architecture are scarce. It reassured me to keep dream big .thanks again. - Daniel E.

I was really inspired by Dais’s lectures. I specifically liked his story about when he first defined his fears and came up with solutions about how to return to his present state if something were to go wrong unexpected and he were to fail if he risked everything. I am so curious to apply for internships in other countries and other states but it is so scary to leave my comfort zone and leave my home. I truly believed him when he talked about defining your own life style and learning from your mistakes, sometimes the hard way. That is exactly why I feel your class is so beneficial because we have the opportunity to learn from your mistakes, which I am sure you have paid for in your career, but I thank you for sharing them with us so that we hopefully will not repeat them. I was also inspired by Dais’s encouragement to be different and have the mind set that “anything common is wrong.” It is so nice knowing that our ideas and work as students is not going unappreciated so I would like the both of you to know that I appreciate the knowledge and experience that the both of you are giving back to us students.
Thank you! - Kellen C.

Hi Jacob,
In regards to Dais lecture, I really feel that he offered a unique perspective in regards to the form of thinking involved within the field. Dais especially clued me into a special niche of architectural methodology that inspired me. His entire history and his shift in viewpoint was truly a positive and enlightening lecture. His experiences offered a unique insight into the thought process and way of life (whether it be monetarily successful or emotionally successful, and the importances of the differences between the two) of a successful firm as well as the relationship between the different fields that must work cohesively. I very much agree with his outlook and hopefully can one day achieve the same kind of success. Thanks again for bringing them in as it was a truly positive experience. Thanks, -Chris G.

Jacob, The presentation by Dais was really good and helpful. I think it was good because it showed us a lot about the personal side of the architectural profession. It made me understand that it isn't just about producing work all the time. It requires that you really focus on the task at hand and ensuring that the work that is produced is the best it can be. A lot of the examples that Dais used in his presentation, I already have begun to see in our studios. The way he spoke is really motivating and shows what one can obtain when they reach their full potential. I really liked the way he spoke about work ethics, and that it isn't necessary to be in studio all the time. His lesson about Efficiency vs. Effectiveness really meant a lot. I see a lot of people that spend days in studio without really doing much. I see others that come to studio and produce work in short intense sessions. The more intense people produce a lot of good thought out work and have time to go home, sleep, and do other things they would like to do. Overall, I think the way Dais explained everything is great. He showed us that it is possible to be an architect and be a part of the culture, and it is also possible to have a life, family and friends. I want to thank you a lot for bringing Dais in. He was very inspiring and helpful. Thanks again. Sincerely, - Luis L.

I wanted to thank you for inviting Dais to lecture us on his experiences with architecture and his firm. It was unlike any other presentation I've ever heard. It was more on the intangibles that the profession of architecture never provides. I've been to presentations by top name architects throughout Los Angeles, and each one boasts more and more about their work and pat themselves on the back. Dais, while highly successful is not a big name architect and is a better example of what an architect can be and should be, than those superstar architects. Its a total shock too, because he is about 20-30 years younger than them! He's highly inspirational, and keeps me going when grades or stresses get to me in studio. I think this school needs him and professors like him to keep a healthy balance in our staff. Thank you -Eric M.

I truly appreciated the lecture series done by Dais. I felt as though all the topics they discussed in their lecture were very applicable to our profession/major. In a way, it was the kind of lecture that I’ve always wanted/needed from architecture school. Typically all the lectures held by architects deal more with their firm’s projects and/or personal portfolios. Never really about life lessons in which you can apply directly to your own life. I felt as though a couple of the topics brought up by Dais that were most important was; the idea of synergy (the working power of a combined team unit as opposed to any one person on their own), all of his idea on efficiency (minimum effort for the maximum result, and also his business idea of locating an office in India so that when the US office shuts down and goes to sleep, the India one is just waking and can continue on the work from the US). Everything expressed by Dais was very helpful and I definitely hope to hear more from him again. -Bijan H.

The lecture by Mr. Daisuke Tanigaki was both inspiring and an eye opener. Mr. Tanigaki's lecture was not like any I have listened to. Usually architects take the opportunity to lecture about their projects and accomplishments, although that is usually interesting and beneficial, Mr. Tanigaki chose to use the opportunity to discuss his life choices both professional and personal. He spoke to us about his life experiences, and about the choices he made in order to shape the life he lives. The idea of finding the happy medium between your professional life and personal life and how to make them work together so neither suffers was a great message. Architecture is my passion yet the idea of family is extremely important to me therefore Mr. Tanigaki's message was very inspiring to me, and it is something I have honestly thought about everyday since we had the opportunity to hear him speak. -Aboudi K.

examples of your projects are so beneficial. I really enjoyed the two
lectures given by Dais. I felt that that they were really

inspiration, and just a different approach and view within the field of
architecture. Thanks, - Allen A

The lecture highlighted many key points that were incredibly helpful. Even before Dice's lecture I had already been going through a transition in the way I was managing my time. I had been feeling empty even though I was doing good with studio and all my other classes. There were so many things that I was sacrificing like my family, friends, and time for myself. I completely related directly with the statement Dice made that said in regards to success without fulfillment is failure. I'm hoping to master the balance in my life through the new ideas about efficiency discussed in the lecture. Although it was all great i do feel that the teamwork presentation lacked some content. I think both presentation could easily be compacted into one. I think overall it really helps and I would definitely recommend students to hear him out about the importance of being able to design your life. - Erick R.
++++++++++
I enjoyed them tremendously. What I found greatly engaging was how they explained their lifestyle and how it has affected their work. I feel that is much more interesting than reviewing the projects that they have completed, we could do that research on our own time. It really brings to light, the emotional investment, that they have made, and continue to make... the modern day architect is continually evolving. Additionally, the information and presentation technique used while explaining the 80/20 rule was particularly successful... giving further understanding of what they are trying to achieve. If any further input is needed, please let me know. Thank you, -Charles R.

It was a pleasure to have guest speakers like Daisuke in our class. I was really fascinated by their lecture; moreover, I understood how important teamwork is in the field of architecture. Its so interesting to see how his passion and teamwork skills helped them to make their own successful company. I have learned a lot from them; furthermore, the one of the things that I learned was that we have to try have time for both work and fun. We also should be able instead of sitting in the studio and working on the model, go to the real world and try to get to know other architects.
Overall, I liked both lectures very much because he really had something to say to us. He both shared with us with his experiences which were very motivating for us. Thank you very much for bringing him to our class because their speech was incredible. He made us understand that having ability to work in teams is very important in the firm. Thank you, - Nare
++++++++
The lecture that Diasuke gave was very inspiring and interesting since the beginning, it automatically caught my attention when he began telling us about his busy life as an architect and about some of his crazy experiences. I found his quote“Action may not always bring happiness but there is no happiness without action” I found it very inspiring and I think we can all learn a lot from this quote. It taught me that if I plan on doing anything in life I need to take action and not let any opportunity pass me by. He told us not to be afraid to move forward and learn from our mistakes, that fear will only hold us back. I also found it interesting to hear how he had to sacrifice everything he once knew in order to become successful and he found happiness along the way. After listening to Tanihaki’s speak it made me understand that anyone can become as successful as one wants to be no matter of where that person comes from, “we all must start from the bottom to get to the top.” - Hector A.
++++++
The lecture from Dais and the subsequent lecture from him and Harvey were very inspirational to me because of my own work habits. I have lately realized that what my peers consider a regular habit of having all nighters does not actually work well for me as far as efficiency in completing my work. Instead it actually wears me down and inhibits my design capabilities. However until hearing his lecture I wasn't sure exactly how to change my habits in order to work better for myself. It was great to hear their ideas on how as architecture students we should consider designing our own lives so that we can become better overall designers. I want to thank you and them for the great opportunity to be part of such an inspirational experience.. -Kristine E.
++++++++
I was so inspired by the first lecture from Dais and the second lecture from Dais and Harvey. The first lecture made me think about the way I work; to the way that I just live my life daily. It made me wonder why couldn't our studio instructors think the same way Dais thought. :( The second lecture got me inspired to think of teamwork and how it’s important to get along and encourage one another. Since I started architecture before I came to Woodbury, I grew to realize that a working buddy is a necessity, rather than just company. To have someone to work with is a very good thing, especially on those long nights where you start to grow weary and want to give up. Your "partner" can give you an extra push and sometimes because they are working, it makes you work harder too!
I felt that these two lectures were completely beneficial; they not only encouraged, but made me see things in a new light. What I feel they could do more of during the presentation would be to show more architecture projects that have been done (we are architecture students! visuals, VISUALS!! :D )
Overall it was two of the best lectures I have ever had in my life. It was encouraging, informative, straight to the point, and not to mention motivating. Thumbs up! - Fiona W.
++++++++
I wanted to let you know how educational it was to hear Dais and Harvey speak during class last week. It is rare to hear two people talk so openly about our profession. The discussion about teamwork was particularly beneficial to me because I realize that being able to work with others efficiently and effectively is the only way to truly achieve success in our field. Dais and Harvey made it quite clear that teamwork has enabled them to be successful and has helped them become better designers through friendly competition. As I am currently involved in a team project for studio, I have thought about their lecture often and have truly taken their advice to heart. Specifically, I am trying to position the members of my team in roles that play to their individual strengths so that the end result has the greatest positive impact for the team. Additionally, although we are not collaborating from different continents around the world, we do have very different schedules. Therefore, we are trying to utilize our staggered schedules to our advantage so that the project can be worked on at various times by various people. Letting go of our own egos about the project is imperative for this to be successful, and Dais and Harvey's relationship has served as a good example of how to put team first. These lessons are not taught often enough in school but are crucial for real-world success.
Finally, it was very refreshing to hear Dais talk about his outlook on life. His easy-going, ever-optimistic attitude is exemplary of how we should approach our time on this planet. We are too often consumed with the day to day stresses of fulfilling our obligations that we don't take the time to sit back and enjoy what we have, or even appreciate why we are working so hard. I feel that this is very important, and appreciate the fact that Dais found it so important to discuss this with us. Thanks again for a valuable first half of the semester. - Eric A.
++++++++
I really enjoyed the speakers presentation. They where very motivating, inspiring and reminded me what really matters is how fulfilling we are with our lives. Im thinking about using his strategy of writing out my fears to see test out if it works better than writing out your goals. I remember they mentioned they have interns at their firm. I would have liked them to talk about their internship program and some of the project or responsibilities intern have at their firm. I hope you bring more speaker on the future. Thanks, - Cindy D.
++++++++
Hello Jacob, His lectures was very fun and informative. I really liked the way he expressed the teamwork strategy and way of working. I think my best part was when he stated that we need to take care of our health and emotional distresses before coming in to an office trying to be part of a project and try to help out. There can not be any positive feedback from an unhealthy or unhappy person. I think he is right. You need to be happy in all aspects of your life in order to come into an office and have a positive attitude and give it all you got. The way that Dais speaks about his teamwork is inspirational. I agree with him in that you should always have your partner's back. And that you learn from each other. I would really love for him to come back and give more lectures or if there are more guest speakers, that they are as great as Daisuke. Thank you - Mirla
++++++++
I found the guest speakers to be inspiring. The faculty I have experienced here are usually more pessimistic toward the profession, while Dais and Harvey both seemed excited and happy about it. Some of the things they spoke about were the things which made me choose this major to begin with. However, since attending school, I was losing hope that I would be able to do the things I want to do outside of my career in this field. Dais’ lecture made me excited about architecture again and gave me hope.
I also found their lectures interesting because most architects would lecture about their accomplishments in terms of how successful their company is and how many built works they have. However, Dais and Harvey spoke about both their successes and struggles in life as a whole. They showed that there is more to work towards than just getting a lot of high end commissions. This was a breath of fresh air in comparison to other lectures and guest speakers I have heard. In general, the two seemed happy, which was most inspiring. To be as successful as they are and still have time to be happy in life is an accomplishment that I am sure we are all striving towards and it is comforting to know that it is possible. -Megan R.
++++++++
Both of the lectures were very inspirational. not only to me but to many of my peers because after the class, it was talked about in many good ways and i was very excited for the following class when you said that he will be returning. it was inspiring to me in many ways, the fact that he shared his story in a way to relate us as young designer students was awesome and not only did he share his life as a student and a designer but as a human being living in this life. that i thought was great. getting tips on how to just live your daily life was super helpful even in the smallest way because i feel like sometimes i forget to live my life outside of school. overall it was awesome and i am truly enjoying the class!!! -Bianca T.
++++++++
I was really inspired by Dais's lecture and the message he had on his outlook on working in the field of architecture. Everything made sense especially the idea of teamwork and getting inspiration and giving inspiration to other people in studio. It's interesting to see how their ambition turned into something big like their own successful company.
I thought both lectures were very informative, motivational, and reassuring that things are possible if you have a good relationship with your partners and especially your engineer! :) - Lee S.
++++++++
Hi Jacob,I really enjoyed both guest lectures. I found their message extremely helpful and wonderfully refreshing. The normal message we receive from instructors/architecture staff is that we should work as hard as possible for as much time as possible; but I have witnessed time and time again that the students who stay up all night and work without evaluating the important concepts have uninteresting projects. I would love to hear more insight from practicing architects. Whereas most lecturers simply go through work they have accomplished, Dias gave us information on the mindset of the architect going into the project... which is infinitely more valuable than seeing unexplained slides on a lecture. I truly appreciate the fact that you took time from our class to invite the speakers. I feel inspired by them and think it has been the most useful and rewarding time spent at this school yet.Thanks, - Leanne
+++++++++
Hey Jacob, I though that the lectures from Dais was extremely beneficial and eye opening.
The first lecture from Dais really opened my eyes to the possibilities and places architecture can help you arrive to. The lecture also helped clarify that success is and its meaning is derived on a personal level, whether it be lots of money, or simply time to yourself at the end of the day. That notion really stuck to me, allowing me to begin to think what success means to me, and am I achieving success on a daily basis.The second lecture showed opportunities for design through collaboration, which is something that we are working on in studio right now. I feel that the three points he talked about are directly applicable to any project that you work on, and if you use them as a, more or less, guideline, you will be able to develop a project fluidly.I want to thank you Jacob for continually thinking of us as architecture students and how you can bring forth people or information that is qualitative and useful rather than just quantifiable information. - David H.
++++++++
Hi Jacob, Daisuke was inspirational and most importantly--completely honest to all of us. He spoke to us as if we were their colleagues, not just students--which i highly admire. I recall him mentioning the importance of teamwork. Without the basic foundation of working as a whole, how can one ultimately succeed? He also mentioned how we as students tend to forget when we should stop the designing process and begin producing (vice-versa). It's interesting how I stumble across this situation multiple times, yet disregard the issue and continue on designing rather than producing. There should be an equal balance. Dais stated architecture as a vehicle that takes you to many different places--more of a ride towards the unknown. I've never thought about architecture in that context, though it makes perfect sense. Overall, I thought he changed my personal view towards architecture itself, and what I can do once I've completed school. Traveling and figuring out exactly what I want to do with my life works best. Taking a break here and there would help me immensely--seeing exactly what the world has to offer. --Celena L.

-Aboudi K.

First off I would like to mention just how much I enjoy
this class. I think the information that we discuss along with all your
examples of your projects are so beneficial. I really enjoyed the two
lectures given by Dais. I felt that that they were really
informative. Their lectures definitely gave us a boost of motivation,
inspiration, and just a different approach and view within the field of
architecture.

- Erick R.

Thumbs up! - Fiona W.

- Eric A.

-Megan R.

-Bianca T.

:) - Lee S.

- David H.

--Celena L.

“:Dare to :Dream”
http://ameblo.jp/e-volution/entry-10789975668.html
2011 Lecture series at California W.University

「Good Morning..」
「Not too bad, How are you...」
「This is from my paradise..」
「Would you like to come in?」
