Chapter 6: Finding Your Audience

host: Yeah. What advice would you give to an artist who's starting on their journey and looking to build an online presence and profile like how did you initially find your audience?

Troye: Well, I think the nice thing about online is there's obviously a lot of crazy stuff that happens online, but for the most part I think it's a really safe place for a new artist, you know when you upload your first song or your first video of you singing or whatever, it is you're starting completely completely from scratch, and even though that's a really daunting thing. I think it's a really positive thing, because it's like this crash course education.

Troye: It's kind of like a small version of the industry that you're about to kind of like enter into. You're going to figure out what's working and what's not and what feels good to you and what doesn't, and so yeah, I would say just start and like even if five people watch your first video or listen to your first song, who knows? Maybe you'll do something a little bit different that then 20 people listen and you've learned something, you know what I mean? That's like the ultimate development deal in my eyes is like to kind of like do one with yourself, where you're like I'm going to take this time to really really really learn about what resonates with people and what resonates with yourself.

host: During the pandemic you lived mostly in Melbourne, and now you split your time between there and la. I was curious about what other shifts this period inspired in relation to your music and your career and just your outlook generally?

Troye: Yeah, I mean I'm not gonna lie and say that it was like all positive I think like through adversity we learn a lot and there were definitely times where I was
you know completely like in the worst mental place I've probably ever been and through this time I learned a couple of really key things. you know the first
thing that I did when we were all locked up in our houses was I wanted to make music, and so that showed me it was like a younger version of myself showed up where I'm like even if there's no one to play this song for right now or nowhere no fancy event to go to or anything like that. I still at the core of it love what I do and feel like I need to do it. And so that was kind of like an inspiring moment, where I was just like damn, I'm like I'm really doing something that I that I love every single day and so, that was cool, it sort of re recalibrated my idea of success I think, and for some reason the default like goal in life and probably in every industry but specifically in the music industry is like, more more more you know and you kind of like have to constantly be on this upward trajectory.

Troye: I remember one time I saw Lauren Hill talking about becoming a master of something and then becoming a student again. And then becoming a master of that and then becoming a student again, and I think that that is such a nice trajectory and that's kind of like what I aspire to rather than just like becoming good at something and succeeding in it, and then it's like well then what there's only one way to go and it's down you know, so it's like I think for me it really adjusted what I want from my life and what I actually consider really important. Troye Sivan has announced details of a huge UK and European tour for 2024.
The tour is in support of Sivan’s acclaimed album ‘Something To Give Each Other’, which was released back in October. The record ? Sivan’s first in five years ? scored the Australian a glowing five-star review from Nick Levine for NME. Levine wrote: “It’s a strikingly vital pop album charged with love, lust, sweat and regret. You won’t need a bosh of poppers to feel thoroughly intoxicated.”
Hailed by The Guardian as "one of this year's best and most distinctive pop albums" and celebrated by Rolling Stone as "a pristine slice of pop heaven," the Something to Give Each Other Tour is destined to be Sivan 's biggest, boldest and brightest tour.
Sivan’s 17-date run will begin in Portugal on May 29, 2024, before continuing throughout Europe. Sivan arrives in the UK on June 22 at the Manchester AO Arena; the tour will conclude in Birmingham.
