Sivan : Yeah, it's one of the things that I'm most proud of is it really came from like the ashes of of a situation.

Sivan went into the studio, after he'd split with a longtime boyfriend.

Sivan : It was scary, and I, I didn't really know how to move through the World by myself.

Sivan : I think the biggest thing that I learned really was that I was like okay.

Born in South Africa, Sivan grew up in Perth Australia.

Sivan : I still very very very much feel like the same person that I've always felt like, which is like, a sort of like, sheltered sweet Jewish kid from Australia, you know, and so all of my kind of values come from from that.

As a kid, he built a YouTube following singing covers from his bedroom.

He was 11 when he made his first TV appearance in Australia on a telethon.

Sivan : I sang a Lot in show growing up and I settled down...

Sivan : That I don't know, it felt, it felt like I had done a good job. With a sweet like South African Jewish mom, came up to me, and was like, "My baby that was so beautiful!" And like give me a kiss on the cheek, like I was like okay, dope we did it! Just want to live in this moment forever.

Sivan understood early that he was queer,

but knew of no other gay kids in his neighborhood.

Anthony：So where did your confidence in that come from?

Sivan : The internet. Yeah 100% it was the internet.

Sivan : I watched hours and hours and hours of coming out videos on YouTube, and I remember specifically watching this video of Lady Gaga speaking at a pride parade.

Sivan : and I looked at the crowd, and I was like, wow okay there's a lot of people, that feel the same way that I do.

Sivan : Once I came out to my family, and they were okay with it,

Sivan : Because I signed with an already existing audience, it sort of set the tone that, okay he knows how to talk to these people, and he knows what he wants to say, and clearly, something is like connecting, so they really left me alone creatively from day one.

Sivan : no no, you're correct. I had never done choreography before this album.

Sivan : Um... I think when I was a kid, I wanted to dance but I always would I thought that people would think I was gay.

Sivan : Now I am gay so I mean I was gay then too but I just didn't want people to know.

Anthony：When you dragged for your new video...

Sivan : Yeah yeah, that's another thing, that I've kind of always wanted to do.

With his new album out, Sivan is taking a break at home in Australia.

Sivan : This album, for me, I... a lot of what I'm Who I made it for, was like, the seven-year-old old version of me, who wanted to be like Janet Jackson or something like that, you know.

Sivan : The choreography, the the scale of the music videos, the traveling the world, it's like I really am reving in the fact that I'm living a dream that I've had since I was a kid.
