最近、コロナ関係の流行語がバリ多い。
Have you noticed the plethora of corona buzzwords these days?
自粛。テイクアウト。不要不急。3密。
jishuku (refrain), teikuauto (takeout), fukyuufuyou (not urgent, not necessary) and 3 mitsu (3 Cs)
けど、SNSで1番バズってるのは、stay homeです。
But by far, the one going most viral on social media is “stay home.”
日本語にもなった。ステイ•ホーム。
It is sometimes written in katakana.
だけど、日本語訳の [家で過ごそう] もよく聞く。
But you also hear it translated into Japanese as ie de sugosou
さすが日本語だ。英語のストレートな表現を柔らかくした。
It’s so Japanese! They’ve taken a strong English phrase and softened it.
本当のStay homeは、命令っぽい。
[家におって！] みたいな感じ。
“Stay home” sounds a lot like a command.
けどさ、[家におって] って、多分日本人にキツく聞こえる。
But saying it command-like in Japanese may sound a little harsh to the Japanese ear.
やけん、[家で過ごそう] になった。
So it became “Let’s spend time at home.”
パチンコに行くことが我慢できないおバカさんには、伝わってなさそうやけん、
もしかしたら、[家におって！] に変えた方がいいかも。
But it seems there’s a myriad of idiots who can’t keep themselves from gambling during a plague who don’t seem to grasp the subtle nuance of “Let’s spend time at home.” Maybe a command is better for them.
とにかく、英語では、[～ましょう] と言う表現はあまり使わない。
Anyway, in English we don’t really use the phrase “let’s” all that much.
一緒に頑張ろう！
みんなでこれを乗り越えよう！
考えよう！
あまり言わないなあ。
英語で、
We will do this together.
We will overcome this together.
We will think of something.
の方が馴染みがある。
日本人は、何でも集団で行動するけん、その集団意識は、言葉に当然出てくる。
The group mentality of the Japanese naturally comes out in the way they use language.
けど、英語で全くlet’sを使わないわけじゃない。
But of course, “let’s” is used in English some.
Let’s work together.
Let’s try it.とか
日本語の[～ましょう] ほど多くないけど。
But not with the frequency it’s used in Japanese.
何故か、日本人は、英語のlet’sフェチがあるらしい。特に、広告会社。
But it seems that many Japanese have a “let’s” fetish. Especially advertising companies.
英語の文法のルールを全て無視して、自由にlet’s遊びしよる。
They ignore the grammar rules for using “let’s” and playfully use it however they want.
考えたり、ググったりすると、こういう例を見つけた。
I thought of things I’d seen and heard, and did some Googling as well. This is what I found.

やっぱり、let’s dictionaryが1番好きかな。辞書ましょう！流行らせたいなあ。
かなり、響きがいい！思わない？
I think I like “let’s dictionary” the best. In fact, I love it! I think I want to get people all over Japan using it. Don’t you love the sound of jishomasho??!!
さて、今からアン先生は、真面目にlet’sの正しい使い方を教えるバイ。
Let’s get started!!
So now, I will stop goofing off and teach you guys how to correctly use “let’s”

まず、let’sは、let usの略だ。
“let’s” is a contraction of “let” and “us.”
だから、日本語の[～ましょう] と同じように、動詞と繋がっている。
英語では、動詞はlet’sの後にくる。日本語では、[～ましょう] は動詞に付く。
So, “let’s” always has to be used with a verb, just like the Japanese -masho is linked to a verb.
けど、全ての動詞に付けていいわけじゃない。
But you can’t use it with any verb.
現在形じゃないといけない。
Only those in the present tense.
Let’s go (行きましょう)
Let’s eat (食べましょう)
Let’s get together (会いましょう/集まりましょう)
Let’s go home (帰りましょう)
日本人はよく、現在進行形にlet’sを付ける。
Let’s thinking.
Let’s eating.
Let’s watching.
直訳すると、
考えているましょう。
食べているましょう。
見ているましょう。
英語のlet’sの使い方は、簡単だ。
It’s really simple to use in English.
動詞の現在形の前に来る。
It comes before the simple tense of the verb.
例文を見てみよう。
Let’s look at some examples.

“Let’s get together tomorrow afternoon.”
スタバに行こう！
“Let’s go to Starbucks.”
ちょっと考えよう。
“Let’s think about it for a while,”
遅くなったけん、家に帰ろう。
“It’s getting late, so let’s go home.”
コロナが終息したら、濃厚接触しよう。
ヤバイ！変な日本語だ。無視しましょう.

最後に言いたいことは、私はこういうふざけているようなブログを書いたけど、日本人の英語をバカにしているわけじゃない。
Finally, I wanna say that although I was pretty goofy in this blog, I’m not making fun of Japanese people or how they use English.
正しく英語を使えるようになって欲しいのです。
I just want you to see how to properly use it.
日本語のlet’sの使い方は、和製英語っぽい。和製英語は、日本人同士のためにあるものだから、英語を間違えても、全然構わない。
何故かというと、その意味は、お互いに伝わるからさ。
The Japanese use “let’s” in a variety of Japanese English words. Japanese English is for Japanese people to better communicate with each other, so it that case I don’t think there’s necessarily anything wrong with using “let’s” this way.
パナソニックのLet’s noteパソコンの名称は、和製英語祭りだ！
けど、あの名前でよく売れているバイ。消費者にインパクトを与えているから。
Think about the Panasonic Let’s Note laptop computer. The name of the computer is a genius Japanese English linguistic creation, and it’s selling like crazy—because it resonates with the buyer.
やけん、そういう使い方は、私は別に良いと思う。名前を付けた人の想像力は半端ない！
So why not “Let’s note!” The guy who thought up that name’s creativity is off the charts!
ただ、英語圏で、let’s happy, let’s eco together, let’s note, let’s dictionaryなどを言ったら、絶対に通じない。
However, if you go to an English-speaking country and use words like this, you won’t be understood at all.
だから、日本人同士、それは使っていいけど、アメリカに行ったら、Let’s look it up in a dictionaryと言ってね。
So if you go to America, please say “Let’s look it up in the dictionary” rather than “let’s dictionary.”
いや、やっぱり、let’s dictionaryより辞書ましょうが好きだわ。。
But thinking about it, even in Japan jishomasho is much cooler than let’s dictionary...
