4年分の減免措置取り消し＝朝鮮総連施設の固定資産税－最高裁の決定受け・熊本市

在日本朝鮮人総連合会（朝鮮総連）関連施設「熊本朝鮮会館」の固定資産税などについて、最高裁で熊本市による2003年度の減免措置の取り消しが確定したことを受け、同市は19日、04～07年度の減免措置の取り消しも決めた。同日付で税額変更の納税通知書を総連側に手渡した。
　同市は、03年度の減免措置を既に取り消していたが、判決で触れられていない04年度以降の減免措置については対応を検討していた。
　同会館をめぐっては、拉致被害者を支援する「救う会熊本」会長が「使用実態がなく公益性もない」と幸山政史同市長を相手に減免措置の取り消しなどを求め提訴。最高裁は昨年11月、市長側の上告を棄却。朝鮮総連関連施設への固定資産税の取り消しが、初めて最高裁で確定した。

February 16, 2008 -- The best way for New Yorkers to protest the vile diatribe of Lorin Maazel is to refuse to attend the orchestra's concerts and other public appearances ("The New York Foolharmonic," Editorial, Feb. 12).
Maazel is out of touch with reality. The most effective "reality check" is via the purse strings.

Maazel is just another of the many entertainers who has made a disgraceful fool of himself by comparing America to North Korea, or to any other country, for that matter.
He dares to question the example that we have set for the world.
In our 230-plus years of existence, we have become the world's leader. We do not starve our people, and we do not incarcerate, torture or kill political adversaries, as North Korea does. Moreover, we are at war with terrorists, not friends with them.
America tolerates Maazel's moronic remarks against his own country; in North Korea, he would have been severely disciplined.
It is unfortunate that Maazel and others like him do not realize that difference.
If Maazel doesn't like America, perhaps he should become musical director of the Kim Jong Il Philharmonic.

Maazel, music director of the North Korean-bound New York Philharmonic, knows how to conduct music, but he is tone deaf when it comes to foreign affairs.
His off-key comments, which take us to task for criticizing North Korea - a concentration camp masquerading as a country - are decidedly discordant.
Could it be that Maazel is channeling one of his predecessors at the Philharmonic?
Several decades ago, the esteemed Leonard Bernstein joined the radically chic crowd with his defense of the Black Panthers.
I guess cacophonous politics sound swell at Lincoln Center.

What is it about the extreme liberal mentality that compels it to equate the greatest democracy in the history of the world with the most evil and dictatorial one?
Sure, the United States has some minor blemishes to answer for, but when Maazel drags his country down to the level of North Korea, you have to wonder about what makes his mind tick.
Is it too much to hope that after the maestro is exposed to all the joys of Kim's paradise, he'll decide to stay there?

NY concert to be broadcast to all North Korea

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A concert by the New York Philharmonic in North Korea next week that officials say could break cultural boundaries and draw the two countries closer will be broadcast throughout the reclusive Communist state.

The concert, to be held in Pyongyang on February 26, will be the centerpiece of a two-day visit and broadcast live by Korean Central Television, the orchestra said on Tuesday. It will also be broadcast internationally.

"A wide distribution of the concert within the country has been a central element of our agreement to perform in Pyongyang from the start," Zarin Mehta, president and executive director of the orchestra, said in a statement.

The concert will include George Gershwin's "An American in Paris" and Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 "From The New World." Both the U.S. and North Korean national anthems will also be played by the United States' oldest symphony orchestra.

The United States and North Korea are formally in a state of war because the 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armed truce that has not been replaced by a peace agreement. But they are engaged in a diplomatic process that could lead to the normalization of ties.

After years of talks, North Korea, which tested a nuclear device in 2006, agreed in February to disable its nuclear facilities in exchange for economic and diplomatic incentives.

But the deal stalled after Pyongyang said it wants more energy aid and diplomatic concessions before it fulfills its pledge to fully disable its Yongbyon nuclear site and declare all nuclear activities. Envoys from both countries met in Beijing on Tuesday in a bid to move the agreement forward.

Critics have questioned the appropriateness of the Philharmonic's visit to North Korea, whose government Washington considers one of the world's most repressive.

The New York Philharmonic, founded in 1842, has performed in at least 418 cities worldwide since 1930.
