マリラとレイチェル夫人以外、マシューはすべての女性
が怖かった。この謎に満ちた生き物が自分を陰で笑って
いるのだと考えると落ち着かなかった。

except during the moments when he met women and
had to nod to them--for in Prince Edward island
you are supposed to nod to all and sundry you meet
on the road whether you know them or not.
