It was pretty interesting to imagine things about
them--to imagine that perhaps the girl who sat
next to you was really the daughter of a belted
earl, who had been stolen away from her parents
in her infancy by a cruel nurse who died before
she could confess.

belted knight:礼帯をつけた騎士(つまり身分が高い）
earl:伯爵
infancy:幼年期
cruel:無慈悲な
confess:告白する

他の孤児のことを想像するってとっても面白いのです。
たとえばね、隣に座っている女の子が実は身分の高い
伯爵の娘で、幼いときに意地の悪い乳母によって両親
のもとから奪い去られ、その乳母はそういう事実を告
げることなく亡くなったとかね。

確かに孤児院の人たちはいい人ですよ。だけどあそこに
は想像する余地がないんです。他の孤児のことを想像す
