I can imagine them away. I can imagine that
I have a beautiful rose-leaf complexion and
lovely starry violet eyes. But I CANNOT
imagine that red hair away.

rose leaf:バラの葉
complexion:顔色,肌の色
starry:星のような
violet:スミレ色の

そういうのは違う風に想像できるじゃない。バラ
の葉のような肌とかスミレ色の星のように美しい
目を持ってるとか想像できるわ。でも髪だけは想
像してもだめなの。

"Yes, it's red," she said resignedly. "Now you
see why I can't be perfectly happy. Nobody could
who has red hair. I don't mind the other things
so much--the freckles and the green eyes and
my skinniness.

resignedly:あきらめて
freckle:そばかす
skinniness:やせた

「そうなの、赤なの」アンは諦めた調子で言った。
「どうして完璧に幸せではないかわかったでしょう。
髪が赤い人はだれも幸せにはなれないの。他のこと
はそんなに気にならないんだけど。そばかすとか目
が緑色だとか、痩せているとかはね。
