Off to the left were the big barns and beyond
them, away down over green, low-sloping fields,
was a sparkling blue glimpse of sea.

左手側に少し離れて大きな納屋がある。その向こう、
緩やかに傾斜する緑の原っぱを下ったところに、青く
輝く海が垣間見えた。

Beyond it was a hill, green and feathery with
spruce and fir; there was a gap in it where the
gray gable end of the little house she had seen
from the other side of the Lake of Shining
Waters was visible.

spruce:トウヒ,マツ科トウヒ属の常緑高木

その先に、トウヒとモミの木が緑色の羽毛のように覆っ
ている丘がある。水のきらめく湖の向こう側から小さな
家が見えていたが、ここからは、丘の木々の切れ目があ
るところに、その家の灰色の切妻を見ることができた。

Below the garden a green field lush with clover
sloped down to the hollow where the brook ran and
where scores of white birches grew, upspringing
airily out of an undergrowth suggestive of delightful
possibilities in ferns and mosses and woodsy things
generally.

森林を思わせる 庭の下方に目をやると、青々と茂ったクロー
バーが小川の流れる谷間まで広がっている。谷間にはたくさ
んの白樺が優美に伸びていて、きっとその下には森にあるよ
うなシダやコケなど、考えるだけでも楽しいものがありそうだ。
