would imagine she was. There was scope for imagination
here.

ここには本当は住めないとしたらどうなんでしょう。それ
でもアンは住めると想像するわ。ここには想像の余地があ
るもの。

Anne dropped on her knees and gazed out into the
June morning, her eyes glistening with delight.
Oh, wasn't it beautiful? Wasn't it a lovely place?

drop on one's knees:崩れるようにひざまずく
gaze out:外を見つめる
glisten:キラキラ光る,～で輝く
with delight:うれしくて

アンは膝をつくと、窓の外に広がる六月の朝を見つめた。
その目は喜びで輝いている。ああ、なんて美しいんでしょ
う。素敵な場所じゃなくって？

But it was morning and, yes, it was a cherry-tree
in full bloom outside of her window. With a bound
she was out of bed and across the floor. She pushed
up the sash--it went up stiffly and creakily, as
if it hadn't been opened for a long time, which
was the case; and it stuck so tight that nothing
was needed to hold it up.

hold up:支える

でも、今は朝だわ、そう窓の外で桜が満開なんだわ。ベッド
から飛び起きると、アンは窓まで走り寄り、サッシを押し上
げた。きしきしときしりながら上がる。何年も開けられたこ
とがないようだったが、実際にそうなのだろう。持ち上げる
とあまりにもきつくつかえたので、何もしなくてもそのまま
止まった。
