"It's time you were dressed," she said curtly.
Marilla really did not know how to talk to the
child, and her uncomfortable ignorance made her
crisp and curt when she did not mean to be.

curtly:ぶっきらぼうに
crisp:短くて明瞭な
curt:素っ気ない

「服を着なくちゃね」　ぶっきらぼうにマリラは話しか
けた。この子にどう話していいのか実際分からなかった。
分からないという気持ちが、本人にそのつもりがなくて
も素っ気無い言葉になる。

She knelt there, lost to everything but the
loveliness around her, until she was startled
by a hand on her shoulder. Marilla had come
in unheard by the small dreamer.

kneel:ひざまずく
be lost to:～に無感覚である
startled:びっくりして
dreamer:夢想家,夢見る人

ひざまずいて、周囲の美しいものに夢中になっていた
アンは、肩を叩かれてびっくりした。この夢見る子ど
もは、マリラが入ってきたのにも気がつかなかったのだ。

Anne's beauty-loving eyes lingered on it all, taking
everything greedily in. She had looked on so many
unlovely places in her life, poor child; but this
was as lovely as anything she had ever dreamed.

美しいものが好きなアンは、すべてのものを貪欲なまで
に覚えておこうと、しばらく眺めていた。かわいそうに、
これまで見るものは美しくないものばかりだった。夢見
てきた美しいものがここにはあった。
