赤毛のアン16章1

OCTOBER was a beautiful month at Green Gables, when
the birches in the hollow turned as golden as sunshine
and the maples behind the orchard were royal crimson
and the wild cherry trees along the lane put on the
loveliest shades of dark red and bronzy green, while
the fields sunned themselves in aftermaths.

Anne reveled in the world of color about her.

立つ。深い赤やブロンズ色がかった緑の素敵な影を落とし
ているのは道沿いの野生の桜の木。牧草を刈り取った野原
は太陽の光を浴びている。

アンは回りで起きている色彩の世界を楽しんでいた。

"Well, Anne Shirley," said Marilla as soon as she
could speak, "if you must borrow trouble, for pity's
sake borrow it handier home. I should think you had
an imagination, sure enough."

borrow trouble:取越し苦労をする

handy:手近にある,便利な

「ねえ、アン」漸く笑いが収まったマリラが言った。「取
越し苦労をするにしてもどうせなら家の中のことにしてく
れないかい。まったくあんたって想像力があるわね」

Marilla turned quickly away to hide her twitching
face; but it was no use; she collapsed on the nearest
chair and burst into such a hearty and unusual peal
of laughter that Matthew, crossing the yard outside,
halted in amazement. When had he heard Marilla laugh
like that before?

いて立ち止まったほどだ。マリラがこんな風に笑うのを
聞いたのはいつのことだっただろうと。
