will、[am going to]、[am ～ing]の使い分けとして、willは「その場で決めこと」に使い、他の２つは「前もって決めていたこと」を示すと説明されることがあります。しかし、実際には、その場で決めたこれからの行動はwillを使うとは限りません。
百聞は一見に如かずです。Youtubeで配信されているアニメ『Kid-E-Cats | Snow Sculptures』に、分かりやすい場面があるので紹介します。

コンテストで子供たちがそれぞれ１つずつの雪像を造りました。ところが大雪が降ってきて作った雪像が埋もれてしまいます。雪が止んだ後に掘り起こしてみましたが、雪像は台無しになっていました。結局、初めに作ったものとは違う雪像を造ることにします。
以下の用例は、そのときに子供たちが何を作ろうとするのかを言う場面です。
Cupcake“I’m gonna shape snow into a beautiful crown for a princess.”
Cookie “I’m making a snow rocket ship.”
Boris “I’ll make a snow clown.”

以前の記事でも紹介したようにPEU第４版では「現在進行形を使いその場で決めた行動」を述べる用例を載せています。
また、同じく以前に紹介したように、「その場で決めたこと」を述べるときに、be going toを使うことを容認する英語のネイティブは70％を超えているという調査結果があります。
文法事項の真相を探るのは、何よりも生きた用例に数多く当たることが一番です。どちらの用例もアニメなどでは頻繁に出てきます。下に紹介した用例は、いずれもYoutubeで視ることができると思います。

ネイティブは幼児期に接する多くの表現を分析(reanalysis)して文法感覚を身に着けます。文法事項の 真相を探るときの基本は、活きた用例に数多く当たることだと考えています。心がけているのは従来の文法説明に固執せず見聞きしたものをまず受け入れることです。ただ、残念ながらその分析力、想像力、ニュアンスを感じ取る力は幼児には到底及びません。文法とはそのようなものなのだとと思います。
