今日は翻訳・・・というよりは英語表現についてのネタです。（関連する過去のエントリ「input v. inputted」）
米国特許の権利化を担当されており、補正書に触れる機会のある方は、ほぼ目にされたことがあるのではないかと思いますが、特定のクレームを削除するとき、
2. (Canceled)
のように書きます。この表現、代理人によって、"Canceled"であったり"Cancelled"であったりするのではないかと思います。
結論としては、別にどちらで記載しても問題はないのですが、いずれかのチョイスをした代理人に、その理由と正当性を語ってもらうことで、その代理人の柔軟性や偏向性を伺い知ることができるかもしれません。
細かいルールはさておき、一般には、イギリス英語で L を重ねる傾向にあります。

アメリカ英語: labeling, labeled
一方、アメリカ英語でも、第二音節以降の音節を強調するケースで、L が重なる場合があります。
control
イギリス英語＆アメリカ英語: controlling, controlled
例外を挙げるとキリがないので、オフィシャルな文献を参照すると、以下の連邦規則 (37 C.F.R.) や審査便覧 (MPEP) 上は、シングルLで記載されています。
(c) Claims. Amendments to a claim must be made by rewriting the entire claim with all changes (e.g., additions and deletions) as indicated in this subsection, except when the claim is being canceled. Each amendment document that includes a change to an existing claim, cancellation of an existing claim or addition of a new claim, must include a complete listing of all claims ever presented, including the text of all pending and withdrawn claims, in the application. The claim listing, including the text of the claims, in the amendment document will serve to replace all prior versions of the claims, in the application. In the claim listing, the status of every claim must be indicated after its claim number by using one of the following identifiers in a parenthetical expression: (Original), (Currently amended), (Canceled), (Withdrawn), (Previously presented), (New), and (Not entered).
他の個所を見ても、シングルLバージョンの方がたくさん目につきます。PTOの公式表現は canceled で決まりかと思いきや！
(1) CANCELED drawing view. Such a drawing view must be surrounded by brackets and must be labeled as "Canceled." For example, FIG. 3 (Canceled). If a drawing view is canceled but not replaced the corresponding figure description in the reissue specification must also be cancelled. However, if a drawing view is cancelled and replaced by an amended drawing view the corresponding figure description in the reissue specification may or may not need to be amended.
意匠の再発行特許というマニアックな項目で、同一パラグラフにも関わらずブレがみられます・・・。もしかしたら、この部分を書いたのはイギリス成分の強い人だったのかもしれません。
※2025/4/10 追記：クレームのStatus Identifierとしては、上記のMPEP714の"(E) Acceptable Alternative Status Identifiers"のセクションにあるテーブル（以下参照）に Cancelled も明記されていますので、公式に使用可能であることが確認できます
なお、CAFCの判決文で、ダブルLバージョンが使用されることもあります。
少し回り道が過ぎましたが、少なくともプロセキューションでよく目にする "Canceled" と "Cancelled" に関しては、前者が優勢なようにも見受けられますが、後者がマイナーとまでもいえず、法律文書上も問題なく使用できるということです。
もし一方のみを正解とし、他方を誤りと主張するアトーニーがいたら、その方は、物事に対する主張の強いタイプの方かもしれません。（職業柄、主張が強くて悪いわけではありませんが）
