thoughの正しい使い方

今日もネタ探しの為にググってたら...

though／althoughについての説明を見つけましたが、間違いを発見しましたので訂正します。

He is calm and thoughtful, though / (×although) he is only a child.

このような場合は、although は文中で使うことはできません。

↑とありますが、文中でもthough/although両方とも使えます。ただし文中で使う場合コンマは不要です。

○Though (Although) he is only a child, he is calm and thoughtful
○He is calm and thoughtful though (although) he is only a child.
X He is calm and thoughtful, though (although) he is only a child.

＊意味は全く同じですが、thoughの方がカジュアルです。

そして更にthoughとbutの違いについての説明も見つけましたが...

thoughは必ずいつもbutと同じ意味ではないので、毎回butの代わりに使おうとすると、時々変な感じがするんだと思います。　

↑とありますが、thoughはbut (or however)と同じ意味です。（質問者さんの語学学校の先生の言ってる事が正しい）

＊Conjunction (接続詞)として使う場合

Though (although) he is a fat guy, he runs faster than me. (コンマ有り）
He runs faster than me though (although) he is a fat guy. (コンマ無し）
He is a fat guy, but he runs faster than me. (コンマ有り）

↑意味は全て同じ


＊Adverb (副詞）として使う場合

会話又はユルい文章ではthoughを最後に持って来てadverbとして使う事がめっちゃ多いです。

He is a fat guy. He runs faster than me, though. (ピリオド & コンマ有り）

↑これも意味は同じです。

＊although (even thoughも）は最後に持ってくる事は出来ません。

A: He is a fat guy.
B: He runs faster than me, though. (コンマ有り）

↑AとBの会話の場合だと、Bは"He is a fat guy"と言うAの発言は繰り返す必要が無いので省略、（その通り彼はデブだけど）と”心の声”の後に「でも僕より走るの早いんだよね」と言っています。このパターンを会話のキャッチボールで頻繁に使います。

それからついでに...

Even though he is fat and ugly, he can manage to find girls who like him.

↑Even thoughもありますがalthoughやthoughに比べるとコントラストが強くなります。「デブでブサイクだけど」「モテる」のギャップを強く強調。


Despite (In spite of) his best effort, he could not succeed.

despiteやin spite ofも同じ意味ですが、その後に来る文は節（S+V)では無くフレーズでなくてはなりません。（because ofの後と同じ感じ）

despite the fact that S + V これはOK
