さて、大佐一家との夕食の場面。マリアは子供たちから素敵なプレゼント（実は蛙）を貰ったと言って子供たちを庇います。
子供たちは、自分たちの悪戯を庇ってくれたマリアの態度に感激し、一斉に泣き出します。
マリアと子供たちの気持ちが初めて通じ合った場面。
そのとき、電報配達のロルフ（17歳）が大佐宛の電報を届けに来ます。翌日から大佐はウィーンに出かけることになりました。
ところで、ロルフと長女のリーズル（16歳）は密かに恋仲になっています。
リーズルは夕食を中座して庭にいるロルフに会いに行きます。
「Sixteen Going on Seventeen（もうすぐ17歳）」
この場面、歌も素敵ですがガラス張りの四阿屋のなかでの二人の踊りもなかなかみごと！
最後のファースト・キスのシーンが微笑ましい♪
