アメリカン・パンケーキ
日本を離れて、５年目になった。離れてからぜんぜん行っていないところのひとつはファミレスです。学生時代ではよく毎週のように行っていたファミレスがなぜかIHOPに行ったときに懐かしく思った。
IHOP はアメリカンのクラシック料理が売っている。でもなぜか材料はお肉・卵・ポテトそして小麦粉 しかないと思うのは自分だけかな。
One thing I missed after 5 years away from Japan is spending time at Family Restaurant. I used this type of restaurant a lot during my school days. This feeling kind of appearing when I went to IHOP restaurant in NJ.
IHOP has plenty of American classic menu. Which menu was made from meat, egg, potato and wheat flour ...
朝食メニューもすごいです。なんといろんな盛り合わせのパンケーキ。こんなお勧めもなんか載っている。

注意：普通にパンケーキを頼んでも４枚が出てきて、大きくて一人ではちょっと多い感じです。
Note: altough you order normal pancake menu, it will come with a 4 layers !! a lot.
でも、パンケーキはうまいです。テーブルにはいろんな風味のシロップが置いてある。あと、コーヒーは飲み放題。
But it is good. They have many choices of pancake and in the table they have few syrups with different flavour.
IHOPは残念なことに、駅の近くとかはあまり見かけないですね。やはり車で移動している人がお客さんです。駐車場が広いファミレスって感じで、やはり車の数が多いメインロードにあったりします。
The only thing is that IHO seems only has chain by the main road, I dont see it near any train station. We do need to drive there, they always have a big car park around.
かもめが片足

今日の朝は天気が良かった。ちょっと -2度ぐらいの気温で風は冷たい。お友達を向かいに行くためにHOBOKEN駅まで行った 。いつものように路面電車乗って、Light Railの駅から待ち合わせ場所の地下鉄のPATH駅まで、マンハッタンが見える岸をいつものように通って行ったのですが、今日はこの風景を足を止めました。
近づいても、このかもめは片足で温かそうに寝ている、、、。すごいと思わない、あの細い足一本で、あのデブな丸い体を支えている、、、、。
To fetch some friend we were going to Hoboken station and as usual we took the Light Rail. It was a nice sunny day with around -2 celcius, the wind was very cold. Walking from the light rail to the meeting point at Path, as usual we were enjoying Manhattan vew when I saw this acrobatic bird.

日曜日は、マンハッタンの路上駐車はただってしってますか？この前まで知らなかった。じゃ、日曜日に車でマンハッタンのドライブするか。博物館でも行きますかということになりました。
Lincoln Tunnel で、Hudson川をくぐって、マンハッタンのミッドタウンにたどり着いた。このトンネルは有料道路です。シンガポールのERPか日本ETCのような装置で支払えば割引で４ドルぐらいだけど、現金しか方法がなかったため、６ドルも取られた。今度EZPASSというこちらの無線有料道路支払い装置を申し込まなきゃ。
In Manhattan, parking on the road is free on Sunday. Our plan today is going to Museum at the mid town area. So we took Lincoln tunnel, to go under Hudson river crossing to Manhattan. This tunnel is a one-way toll where we had to pay $6 for going into Manhattan. It is free for going out from Manhattan though...
I was told that with electronic wireless payment EZPASS it is $4,,,, nothing we can do... we only hav cash.
マンハッタンの道路は結構すいていましたので、すぐ行こうとした Metropolitan Museum にたどり着いたが、駐車はただだけど、空いているところがなかった！！！
マンハッタンの路上駐車は縦列駐車。縦列駐車でしかも車と車の間は人が取れないほど狭いので、駐車するのはかなりに運動になります。「NO STANDING」のマークがある場合かFire Hydrantの近くかバス停とかを除いて。そうじゃなかったらすぐ駐車違反の切符が張られる。

アメリカでは、クレジット暦はソシアルセキュリティーナンバーの次に必要なものです。でもこれはすぐに取れるものではない。クレジット暦はつまり、今までこの人はちゃんとクレジットカードの出費やローンを払っている暦を持っている。クレジット暦がないとつまり、もしかしたら出費したものをあとで払えないじゃないかと言う疑いがあるらしい。
で、自分はアメリカに着たばかりなので、クレジット暦がない。今までいろいろ大変な目にあった。まず、携帯電話のプラン契約がちゃんと取れないでしょ、それで、アメリカのクレジットカードもまだ今も取れていない。車のローンももちろん取れない。
本当にめんどくさい！
The 2nd important thing for living in US after Social Security Number is Credit History. This one really trouble-some. Without credit hystory you cannot open a credit card account and ofcourse you cannot take any loan. Like chicken and egg !! You need to create credit history, you need to take a credit. But you cannot open a credit card account without credit history.
Its really crazy system ...

今日は床屋に行ってきた。会社の昼休みで、バスを乗ってチャイナタウンまで。まるでシンガポールに着いたような、、、感じ。場所は、107 East Broadway、 Market st との交差点のあたり。名前は「蘭蘭髪型設計」。まずは肩のマッサージ。そして、シャンプーをしてくれている間に頭のマッサージ。髪のカットはまた別の人。
かなり結果は良かった、、、けど写真は載せません。
コストは＄15、まあまあかな、しかしマッサージをしてくれた人とカットしてくれた人に＄5ずつシップをあげました。あげすぎかなあ？？結局＄２５かかった。
いつもシンガポールではシンガポールドル＄１０のカットに行っていたので、、NYは高いかな。

やった！運転免許を無事合格

無事一発でニュージャージの運転免許を取った。
常識試験が非常に大変だった。だって、たとえば、ウィンカーは最低交差点の何Feetまでにつけなければいけないと言われても、、、Feetがピントこない。
ロードテストが普通はありますけど。シンガポールの運転免許を見せたらロードテストを免除してくれた。超らっきです。有効期限がないシンガポールの免許は非常に強いです。（シンガポールにいる皆さんは取った方がいいですよ、海外のいろんな国で使えます）。
これで、アメリカの道路は怖くない！！(これは嘘です、、、左ハンドルまだ怖いです）。
さて、次は車か？それとも、２輪の免許か？
Was a lucky day that I passed the written test on a 1st try. It was really hard for me. Mainly b'coz i used to remember different measure. Like: How far from the intersection we have to turn on the turning signal, and all answer were on feets.
And the 2nd lucky is that I did not need to do the road test! I told them that I have been licenced for years in Singapore. And they check their data base looking at my Singapore licence and... yes they waived the road test!
Now what next... get a car or get the 2 wheel licence ...

ニューヨーク最初のお正月は 初詣
- The first New Year in New York is visit shrine for HATSUMODE -
アメリカでの初ニューイヤーはなぜかかなり日本風のお正月だった！
まずは６時ごろには、イーストビレッジあたりの２ND AVENUEに新しくオープンしたNORI と言う和風レストランで集合した。日本人が経営したレストランなので味には自信があるようなレストラン。
コース料理で２０ドル、お酒はシャンパンを誰かが持参した。かなり手ごろなニューイヤーディナー。そばとお魚の選択で僕は魚を取った。
Somehow, my first New Year in US was a Japanese o-syougatsu.
We started at 2nd Avenue around East Village, a new restaurant called NORI. Owned and run by Nori who was from Japan, We took a $20 course meal and we brought our own drink. It was really affortable New Year dinner. I choose fish from the choice of Soba or Fish.
しかし、すごいのはこれから。
７時ぐらいには、みなで出かけた向かった場所は除夜の鐘を鳴らしに行ったの。そうそうこのマンハッタンでその１０８本鳴らす除夜の鐘！！その場所はニューヨーク本願寺 だった。
建物の中だった。きたときははじまっていて真っ暗。
From there, at around 7PM+ we moved and heading to a place for ring the Jyoya Bell. Yes. it is in Manhattan and we have place to ring the Jyoya no kane for 108 times. The place we went was the Temple of Hongan.
It was inside a building .... It has been started when we were there. Dark.
そのときは何で１０８と言う数字の説明だった。説明は両方日本語と英語で行った。で、鐘はどこだ、、、、。
ちょっと驚いたけど鐘はさかさまで床に置いてあった。これは初めてだった。自分の番は７１番目ぐらいだった。かなり参列者がいたね。
The priest was explaining why it is 108 times. He himself explained both in English and in Japanese. Not bad. But... where is the bell... I dont see anything hanging.
Found it!, the bell is on the ground and it is up-side-down. I is new to me. mmm.. I think there must be 2 types of bell. My number was 71. And I think there are people till number 80 or 90 ... A lot.
１０８回いろんな人が鳴らしていろんな鐘の響きがあったような気がした。そのあとは、そこで、年越しそばが出ると言うことで、皆さんで２階まであがって、年越しそば (うどんもちなみにあった）、をいただいた。
There were a lot of different sound of ringing. Quite.. only the bell.. kind of different world. We went upstairs after the 108 bells. They provide a soba or udon .. 'Toshi koshi soba'.
時間が夜の１１時回ったころには次の目的地に向かった。
向かったのはセントラルパーク。マラソンもあるし花火も見えるだそうだった。そのときの気温は温かいといわれていて、摂氏で１度前後、、、、。シンガポールからきた僕には「あたたかい」と言う表現からはかなり離れている感じだった。
しかも、Hudson riverのすぐそばにあるマンハッタンのウェストのお寺から歩いていった。
We moved to next destination when the time pointed around 11PM. We were going to Central Park To see the mid-night marathon and to see the New Year fire works from there. It was said to be a warm New Years night. In celcius it was around 1 degree. Yes right. It IS VERY warm for us from Singapore.
And from the West side of Manhattan next to Hudson River we walked there ...
仮装マラソンだったので、人が多いし、普通のマラソンランナーや面白いコスチュームのひとも多い。会場のステージの近くまで歩いてみたけど、人が多い。
The midnight marathon (by Emerald) was a costume marathon. some funny runner are all over the place. On the middle of people we walked toward the stage.

そして、２００８年になって、しばらくしたら（日本はもう特に２００８年の昼！！）、みなさんが歩きつかれたし、寒いし。解散かと思ったら、、、初詣に行くことになった。
向かう場所は、ニューヨークの神道ファウンデーション 、West 55th streetにある。距離はおそらく１０ブロック無頼かな。もちろん歩き！！みな元気だなあ、、、。
ついたときに僕にはやっとって感じだった。
And then few minutes after turning 2008, we were tired of standing and dancing, feeling very cold. Good time to go home and sleep... but, we are going to a Shrine as a culture in Japan to go there on New Year for HATSUMODE. Yes in Newy York.... there is a shrine at West 55th street. About 10 blocks away from the current location and ofcourse we were walking there ...
The Shrine is actually uses a mansion, not like what we see in Japan. And a Miko-san (female priest?) were there to hold the ritual.
巫女さんがお祓いしてくれた。
くたくたで家に帰ったのは３時か４時ぐらい。
日の出をマンダリンオリエンタルホテルのスカイラウンジで見ると言う話もあったけど、僕らにはちょっと体が持たないのだ。もう若くないなと言う実感、、、、。
しかし２００８年お正月の新しい発見もまた思い出に。
I think around 3 or 4AM we reached home. Not really remember what happened next...
Actually there was a plan to go to Mandarin Oriental Hotel, there is a Skyline lounge that we can see the Sun rise of 2008.... But not for me... I think Im not young any more... :(

花火は？、、、、きれいだった。現在携帯から動画をダウンロード中、、、後ほど。

そして、２００８年になって、しばらくしたら（日本はもう特に２００８年の昼！！）、みなさんが歩きつかれたし、寒いし。解散かと思ったら、、、初詣に行くことになった。
向かう場所は、ニューヨークの神道ファウンデーション 、West 55th streetにある。距離はおそらく１０ブロック無頼かな。もちろん歩き！！みな元気だなあ、、、。
ついたときに僕にはやっとって感じだった。
And then few minutes after turning 2008, we were tired of standing and dancing, feeling very cold. Good time to go home and sleep... but, we are going to a Shrine as a culture in Japan to go there on New Year for HATSUMODE. Yes in Newy York.... there is a shrine at West 55th street. About 10 blocks away from the current location and ofcourse we were walking there ...
The Shrine is actually uses a mansion, not like what we see in Japan. And a Miko-san (female priest?) were there to hold the ritual.
巫女さんがお祓いしてくれた。
くたくたで家に帰ったのは３時か４時ぐらい。
日の出をマンダリンオリエンタルホテルのスカイラウンジで見ると言う話もあったけど、僕らにはちょっと体が持たないのだ。もう若くないなと言う実感、、、、。
しかし２００８年お正月の新しい発見もまた思い出に。
I think around 3 or 4AM we reached home. Not really remember what happened next...
Actually there was a plan to go to Mandarin Oriental Hotel, there is a Skyline lounge that we can see the Sun rise of 2008.... But not for me... I think Im not young any more... :(

足したことはなかったけど、新鮮な経験はまず、会社の上司に家でクリスマスディナーに招待された。問題はその場所が、ニューヨークから１時間半のドライブ、かなり奥の郊外。
自分は車をレンタカーでMazda３を手配して、地図はあるけど、それだけでは心配なので、GarminのポケットサイズGPSも買った！！（もしかしたらバイクを買ったら、バイクにも使えるサイズ）。
Not really much on Xmas, but it was really new to me. Xmas dinner invitation!, YES, but the location is really far. About 1 and half hours to the South-West of New Jersey.
other way than get a car rent. It was a nice Mazda3. And we decided ti get a Garmin - pocket size GPS - (Hoping I can get a 2 whellers soon and attach to it).

Going tru Turn Pike highway, just next to the Newwark runway ... planes seems come to us before they turned to the runway ...
カーナビにしたがって、たどり着いたが、家の大きさやそのクリスマスデコレーションに驚いた。
Nice and easy following the GPS, lucky to get this as there was nothing on the way here. The house is so big and awesome with all the Xmas light.
これはかなりのお金や時間や労力をかけたクリスマスデコレーションだ！何か、映画とか昔どこかで見た家に飾ったクリスマスツリーが非常に小さく感じた。
あまり写りが良くないが、ちょっと横から見ると、壁にはサンタの映像が映っている。
This one must really cost time effort and money! All ather Xmas three I saw before was like nothing compare to this. Below is not a good shot, but look at the Santa on the wall.
２０分送れて、家の中はもうたくさん人がいた、みな子供とかつれてきている。家の中の飾りも待った、ここではきりがなく書くことになってしまうかもしれない。
ひとつだけ紹介すると、ある部屋の角に、何かの町の模型があるけど、毎年新しいのを買って、常に増えていくらしい。子供は喜ぶんだよねこういうの。
We came 20 min late and almost everybody were there with family and kids. Inside the house also full of decoration. Look at one below, every year they buy a new addition, and this will keep growing. Kids must like it.
おなかがいっぱいになって、お酒が冷めたころにはすぐ先に買えることにした。なぜか言うと車が真夜中までしか借りれなかった。
We needed to return the car by mid-night ... like Cinderella. The Masda3 will turn into pumkin :). so we rushed out after feel all the alcohol was gone ,,,

そしてクリスマスには何をしたかというと、冬の寒いところの中にマンハッタンのクリスマス飾りを見ようと言うことで歩いてまわった。実際に寒かった！
その中に紹介すると：
まずは有名なロックフェラーセンターのクリスマスツリー。広場にたどり着いたら、まずはコインのプールが目の前に、、、、。１セントの募金らしい 。（ｂｙ Penny Harvest）
On the Xmas day we were outside, wandering in Manhattan in a very cold rain, looking at all Xmas decoration. In the Rockfeller Centre, just before cross the street to see the big Xmas tree, we got to a big pull of penny coin. For children.
And the Xmas three is really big, I meant huge. This was taken from far away.
例のクリスマスツリーはかなりでっかい。後ろのビルを見るとかなりのフロアの高さ。

きれいだった、、、、人も多かった。
Beautiful. And altough it was cold rain. A lot of people came here. Tourists, I guess.
５ｔｈ Avenueのミッドタウンあたりには、道路の真ん中にでっかいスターがぶら下がっている。
Walking on 5th Avenue around mid-town, there was a big star floating on the middle of the road.
クリスマスとは関係ないけど、近くのTrump TowerにはかなりでっかいGucciのポスターが、、、
Taken this one too, a huge Gucci poster at Trum Tower building.
ダウンタウンには、こんな小さい広場がある。実は２００１年１１月の前には違う景色だった。

Vmaxが戻った
- The return of my Vmax -
お仕事がそんなに忙しくないこのごろは、家の片付けで忙しい日々のこのごろです。少しずつお引越しのダンボールが消えていくのがうれしい。飾り物、物置など入っているダンボールも手がまわるようになったが、この前箱を開けると、こなものが出てきた。
These days were slow due to the holiday seasons, but back home, there are a lot of stuff to do. Slowly all the moving boxes were disapiaring from our home. And now we able to open small boxes of ornament etc. One box I opened is this:
ショック！！ばらばらの状態だった。よくよく見ると壊れた部品はなかったけどね。早速、接着剤をそろえたりして、修復作業に入った。意外と大変だった。特にエンジンから出て行くパイプはきつかった。部品は結構細かくて、これを作ってくれた人にはその作ってくれる気持ちには本当に感謝ですね。
部品とかは細かいが紙だからつけるのはそんなに大変じゃなかった。修復作業は、２日間かかった！その結果は：
Big shock!! The Vmax is on pieces. Almost all the parts are everywhere... but the good news is that no parts are broken. I just need to get a glue, an instant one. Looks easy... but it was very dificult to put all together. And this is only putting the part together. Thinking of creating it from the scratch ... Really thank you to Isaac who had made it for me.
The parts are small but as those are paper it was not too hard to stick them with the glue. I took 2 days to finish it.
では、ひとつだけ間違えがありますが、Vmaxを乗っている皆さんは分かるかなあ。
Now, there is 1 mistake there, I believe Vmax rider can spot it ....

実は、Vmaxミニーはもうひとつあります。
これは、プラスチックのモデルVmax. こいつもばらばらでした。しかも、壊れているパーツもたくさんあった。バックミラー、フロントブレーキのレーバー、ハンドル、ステップ、リアウィンカー、ステップ、そしてピンチだったのは、スタンドも壊れた。
どうしようかと思った。
地味な作業に入った。一日には部品ひとつ直して、、、合計２週間ぐらいかかった。無事直った。
I also have another mini Vmax, a plastic miniature got from eBay. This one was really broken apart. And a lot of parts are broken like back mirror, front brake lever, handle, step, rear sign light, and also the stand also broken.... This break my heart.
It was really a one fix in every step, it cost me 2 weeks to attend fixing it almost every day.
