こんにちは、ENC/GNAスタッフです。

さわやかな秋の季節になりました空気が澄んでいるのでどこかへ出掛けたり、何かを始めたりと行動的になれますねさて、本日は歌のお話です

英語の歌に限らず誰かのために作られた歌というのは沢山ありますね。

例えば、ビートルズの【Hey Jude】でしたら、ジョン・レノンの息子のジュリアンに贈られた歌というのは有名な話です。

では、【Sweet Caroline】という曲はご存知でしょうか。

こちらは誰のため作られたかというと、ケネディ元アメリカ大統領の長女キャロライン・ケネディさんのために作られました

キャロラインさんといえば、次期駐日アメリカ大使として話題になっていますが、そんな彼女が小さい頃馬に乗っている様子を見て Neil Diamondが曲のイメージを膨らまし、５年後の1969年にシングル曲としてリリースしたそうです。ビルボードチャートでは最高位４位となって200万枚を売上げたプラチナ・ヒットソングです

1997年からはMLBボストン・レッドソックスの本拠地球場であるFenway Parkで、この曲が演奏されるようになり、今では８回の途中で毎回流れます。

曲の合間はみんなで「So good!! So good! So good!!」と合いの手をいれるのがお決まりのようですよ。誰もが知っている曲なだけに、自然とみんなが一丸となれるのですね。

先日アメリカ人の知人がカラオケでこの曲を歌ってくれました。

一度聞いただけでも覚えやすいメロディーと柔らかなリズムが心地よく、すぐに気に入りました。いつか私も本場の大合唱に参加してみたいです。

今日はダバオから届いたKenneth講師のコラムをご紹介します

人生においてとてもためになるコラムです
ちなみに、タイトルにもなっている、
”The Juice is Worth the Squeeze”はいわゆる慣用句です
美味しいジュースを飲むためには、フルーツを絞らなければいけません
つまり、何かを得るには努力して備える必要がある、
すなわち、頑張る甲斐があるよという意味です

ダバオのスタッフにも聞いてみると、こんな答えが返ってきました。

”The Juice is Worth the Squeeze”. = After working very hard for a difficult task, the outcome of the work you have done is very fulfilling.

 Example: 

For students: After studying hard, they passed the exam

Life: after all the difficulties/ challenges we faced in our lives, we are here standing still and was able to surpass all those difficulties that made us a stronger person

 Every person struggles for a reason.
Most people struggles to be good, some struggles to be better, while the others struggles to be the best.
How about you?
What are you struggling for?

In life’s journey, we meet different kinds of people.
There are people who push you up, and there are those who pull you down.
Be grateful and delighted for the people who push you up, but you should be thankful for the people who pull you down, because unknowingly they are making you strong.

Life is full of decisions, decisions that could either make or break us.
Decisions that we make should not be based on a toss of a coin, it needs a lot of pondering and thinking about, because a single decision could lead you to success, or it could lead you to the biggest downfall of your entire life.

Every story ends with a happy ending, if it’s not yet happy, then it’s not yet the end.
People work hard to achieve their goal but fails.
It’s quite disappointing, but remember this, things may not always come your way, and the outcome may not be the one that you are expecting, but it is definitely the best for you, and it will lead you to a place where you should be.

Some people are afraid to fail, and that makes them afraid of trying.
That’s an attitude that should not be tolerated.
How would you know if you can do it if you will not try?
How would you know if you will win or loose if you will not compete?
How would you know if you will succeed or fail if you will not perform?
And how would you know on what lies ahead if you will not take a step?

Leave no space for fear in your heart.
Who knows?
Their may be a brighter future that is waiting to be seized, or an opportunity sitting tight hoping to be grabbed, opportunities that are reserved specially just for your, and when you are already holding at it,  you will then realize that the juice is always worth the squeeze.

No Man Is An Island 【Niño講師のコラム 3】

今回はE.Tが登場するようです
もし、自分が１０歳の頃、エイリアンに出会っていたら、
エリオットのように別れを惜しむような友達になれたでしょうか？

Every one of us long to have a companion in life.
May it be family, friends, partner, or even in your wildest imagination-someone who is not like ours.
The desire to be not left alone is all but natural.
Even from our earliest stage in development,there comes a time
where we unconsciously create our imaginary friends.

The explanation to this phenomenon is yet unclear but it only means that at all stages in life,
we need to have someone we can relate to.
Much more, someone we can be with for the rest of our entire existence.

 

 The Movie E.T. (Extra Terrestrial) was shown on theaters in the year 1982.
I wasn’t born that year yet so I'm pretty sure I haven’t seen this on big screen.
Although the movie has become part of my childhood days also.
The story is a bit blurry but I happen to store memorable parts of the movie in my subconscious mind.

 This is about an family of alien which visited the earth for some explorations.
Due to unexpected events, they were surprised as the human beings witnessed them.
In a series of unfortunate events,
as they try to nimbly escape from the planet,
one little alien was accidentally left behind.

Luckily, a 10year old Elliot discovered it's existence.
It wasn't difficult for both of them to create a bond and it led them to learn a whole lot of different things from each others world.
But the alien's existence to earth is much more complicated than they can imagine.
Eventually, Elliot needed to learn to let go of the little alien and the friendship made.

 

  Farewells and goodbyes are always heartbreaking.
I guess no one mastered the art of letting go.
Cause if so, the person didn't actually matter to you.
Elliot in this movie speaks in behalf of all the childhood experiences one can undergo.
Amazement, joy, adventures and all rainbows and butterflies.
But at some point, there are dead ends of the road.
Where we need to let go and take another path.
But just like the little alien said, they may go on separate ways, yet he will still remain to look after him.
The special bond we create with our young friends and companions will always create a mark in our hearts.
With this, we are never alone.
That makes no man is an island. Cause eventually, someone out there is waiting for our arrival.
They may be entirely new people, or if fortunate,
the people we met before are still the same people waiting at the end of the line.

オリンピック招致に貢献した佐藤 真海選手の名スピーチに感動！

２０２０年夏のオリンピック・パラリンピックの開催地が東京に決定しました
招致活動、最終プレゼンテーションを担ったひとりは、
無名のパラリンピアン、佐藤 真海選手でした。

彼女のプレゼンテーションが、こんなにも多くの人の胸を打ったのは、
彼女自身の言葉でスポーツの力を訴えたから

逆境の中でも笑顔で歩み続けた彼女の言葉には、
ＩＯＣ委員会会長に、"Very good！"と称えさせる力があったのです

彼女のスピーチに感銘を受けた我らがENC/GNAのＹ事務局長は、
早速、彼女のプレゼンで英会話レッスンを受けたようです

こんにちはENC/GNAスタッフです

今年の夏は日本全国各地で大雨が降り、大きな被害の出ている地域もあるようですが

皆様のお住まいの地域はいかがでしょうか？

少し前までは激しい陽射しにぐったりしていましたが、雨の効果か最近は

特に朝晩は肌寒く感じるくらい過ごしやすい気候になってきましたね。

新学期も始まり、夏休みの思い出話に花を咲かせておられる方もたくさんおられるのではないでしょうか。

先日、別のスタッフがヨーロッパ周遊旅行のお話をさせて頂きましたが

私はというと、国内で避暑を求め、初の北海道へ行ってきました！

札幌・小樽での滞在だったのですが、本当に同じ国なの！？と思うような心地良い気候で過ごすことができました。

特に小樽では、硝子工芸やオルゴール館、昔ながらの街並みなどを堪能し

ノスタルジックな雰囲気に浸ることができました

以前に沖縄で琉球硝子の体験をしたことはあったのですが

小樽の硝子はまた全く違った雰囲気で････

写真の通り、淡い色使いがとても涼しげです！

もちろん食器だけでなく、アクセサリーや花瓶、文具、ランプ等
様々なガラス製品が、昔ながらの姿であったり、現代風に創意工夫された姿で
所狭しと並んでいて、木造の建物との雰囲気も合わさり、
店内にはなんとも言えない空気が漂っていました。

もちろん、海鮮や某有名洋菓子店ル○オなど、食の文化も堪能してきましたよ

小樽は明治の文明開化以降に栄えたそうで、京都等に代表されるいわゆる
日本の古都と比較するとあまり歴史の長い街ではありませんが、だからこそ、
明治期の日本の和洋折衷、どこか懐かしいノスタルジックな街並みが
今でも変わらず残っているんだそうです。

同じ日本国内といえど、こんなにも気温、文化、食べ物、街並みが違っていると
どこか違う国に来てしまったかのような錯覚まで感じてしまいます

皆さんはこの夏にどんな体験をされたのでしょう？

5 years and still counting… 【Hazel講師のコラム】

今日はダバオから届いたHazel講師のコラムをご紹介します
Hazel講師がこの英語教師を始めた頃の思い出を綴ってくれました
初日はアクシデントに見舞われたようですが、
厳しいトレーニングを続けて、今ではHazel講師もすっかりベテラン講師です

スカイプオンライン英会話ENC/GNAでは、
一定以上の英語力をクリアすることはもちろんのこと、
責任能力があり、忍耐強く、快くトレーニングを受けられる人間性を講師採用の基準としています
ENCに至っては、さらに、
教員有資格者及び、英語教育課または英語コミュニケーション課の大学を卒業し、
専門学科において平均を超えるレベルでなければ、
トレーニングを受けるまでもなく不採用になってしまいます

そこから、
英語指導から、生徒さまのやる気をださせる工夫、異文化の学習など、
様々な厳しいトレーニングが始まります。
しかも、それはクリアするまで続きます

そして、講義とレッスンデモで指導力を磨き、
実際のレッスンが始まっても、
トレーナーがレッスンをチェックし、講師のレッスンの向上を促します
そんな厳しいトレーニングも、生徒様のためです。
これからも講師陣は、向上心を忘れず、自分を磨きます

It is still fresh in my mind when I first joined ENC last June 16, 2008. 
That day was rotten. 
I was an hour late on my very first day of training due to heavy rain which (caused flooding in our area) brought flashflood to my area.
I would have not proceeded to ENC office for my training because of the shameful feeling I was experiencing at that time. 
I was anxious of my tardiness as it would create a negative impression on me. 
However, that idea didn’t impede me from continuing my training. I was persistent then. 
My perseverance was more than enough to overpower my negative feeling. Suddenly, an old adage came rushing to my head 
“Winners never quit and quitters never win”.

There were 11 trainees in my batch. 
Half of which were newly graduates while the other half were middle aged. 
The only thing common to all of us was that we were all novices to this kind of profession - online teaching.
We had undergone a month-long of rigid and painstaking training. 
From demo lesson to grammar to American accent training and to some English related mind boggling activities. 

One month later, we became full-fledged ENC teachers.
In August 2008, I was transferred to a now defunct One-on-one school - a former sister company of ENC. 

Its methods and teaching styles were the same with GNA. 
However, we had a few number of students. It was a little pricey. 
Hence, the Global Net Academy was created. 
The management decided to transfer One-on-One students to GNA. 
The latter was launched in June 2009. 
I am proud to say that I was one of the pioneering teachers in GNA. 

The number of students at that time was indeed overwhelming. 
From all walks of life with different levels - kids, beginner, intermediate, advanced and business. I was able to handle them. 
With lessons ranging from 16 to 17 everyday, my teaching skill was eventually improved.
We moved to a new office last October 2010. 
Although the floor area is smaller than that of the old office, nevertheless, it is in good location. 
It is situated at the downtown area, very accessible to hospitals, hotels, mall, fast-food chains, coffee shops and some grilled restobars.
Some experienced ENC and GNA teachers left the company while a number of skillful teachers came. It was heartwarming to know that there are still students who chose to stay in ENC and GNA.Same goes to the teachers who stayed behind despite the company’s hard times.

As I look back, I’m glad that I’m now part of ENC and GNA history.I have witnessed the different phases of this company for 5 short years, its greatest and its lowest points, its rebuilding and its growth milestones. It's been 5 long years and I'm counting still. Now we are moving forward.

なつかしの梅田ＯＳ劇場とMovie dialog

先日日本事務局スタッフが、夏休みを取ってご夫婦でスイス、ドイツ、フランスへ旅行へ行ってきました
すばらしい景色と出会いにより、たくさんの思い出を作れたようで、
パワーアップして元気に帰って来ました

美味しいフランスのお菓子のお土産をいただきました
ごちそうさまでした

さて、皆様は今年の夏、バカンス（言い方が古い３０年代）でどこかへ訪れられたでしょうか

私は休暇を少し残してますので、観客の少ない平日に休暇を取り、
「少年Ｈ」と「風立ちぬ」のはしご観劇を目論んでいます

昭和３０年代以前のお生まれの方（私です）で、
関西ご出身の方はご存知かも知れませんが、
大阪梅田（現在ヘップナビオの場所）に「ＯＳ劇場」というすばらしい映画館がありました。

前列の観客の頭を気にすることなく映画に集中できる、
シネコンの半席ずらし配置や極端な階段状客席は、関西ではＯＳ劇場がはじめてでした

この劇場がもっとすばらしいのは、正面・右・左とカメラ３台で撮影し、
１本に同調したフィルムを映写するシネラマ70mmに合わせた、
半円筒状の大型ワイドスクリーンです。（詳しくは「映画館の魅力　これがシネラマだ」へ）

通常の35mmのシネマスコープ作品を映しても迫力満点で、
アクションや超大作はできるかぎりこの劇場で観たものでした

私が自分でお金を払って最初に見た映画は、
このＯＳ劇場で観た「サウンドオブミュージック」でした

当時としては館内の音響もすばらしく、
オーストリアのシャーフ・ベルク山の美しい牧草地を駆けてくる、
主人公マリア役のジュリー・アンドリュース。
歌声は当時高校生で毬栗坊主頭の私は驚嘆しました
（ご覧になった事のない方はぜひ。映画とミュージカルの虜になりますよ）

ストーリーはナチス支配を乗り越えて生きようとするトラップ大佐一家の姿を、
オーストリア・アルプスのすばらしい景色を背景に美しい音楽を盛り込んで描いています

この映画はアカデミー賞に輝く不朽の名作です

心に残るすばらしい映画は、いつの時代になっても色あせることなく、普遍的なメッセージを伝えてくれます
今はビデオ・オンデマンドやレンタルＤＶＤでお家で気軽に鑑賞できたり、
映画もいろんな楽しみ方が増えましたね

映画や映画館が輝いていた時代を知ってる世代の人間としては少しさみしい思いがします

みなさんぜひ映画館へ映画を見に行きましょう
きっと新しいあなた自身とのすばらしい出会いが待っていますよ
できれば大切な人といっしょに

エアメール フロム スイス～♪

こんにちは、スタッフです
先週、夏休みを頂いて、海外へと旅行に行ってまいりました
関空からドーハを経由してフランクフルトへ
そこからドイツ、スイス、フランスを巡りました

９日間の日程で３カ国を巡るため、移動時間がとても多く、
移動のバスの中から、スカイプで日本事務局のスタッフに連絡をしてみたりして、
良い意味で、世界はこんなにも小さくなったのかと、感動していました

旅行記はまた、おいおいアップしようと思いますが、
今日は表題のエアメールについてです
みなさんはエアメールを出したことがありますか？

今回、スイスはアルプスの、Top of the Europeユングフラウヨッホから、
少しでもアルプスの風を送ろうと、日本事務局にエアメールを出してみました

ユングフラウヨッホから出したハガキに押される消印は、ちょっと特別仕様なんです。
切手もかわいらしいですよね
一週間くらいで日本事務局に届きました

せっかくなので、少しエアメールの書き方を。
このハガキのようにあて先が日本なら、
AIR MAIL  Japan　だけを英語でしっかり書いておけば、
住所は日本語でＯＫです。

一般的に、差出人は左上（From と書いておけば完璧）、

あて先は右下です。
そして、大きく分かりやすく、AIR MAILとあて先の国名を書きましょう。
特に赤字で記入しなくても大丈夫ですよ

住所を英語で書くときは、逆から順に書きます。
マンションなどにお住まいの方は、
住所の一番上に、部屋番号、マンション名を書きましょう

この時代に手紙っていうのもなかなかよいものです
みなさんもエアメールを書いてみてはいかがでしょうか

Who haven't seen or heard of the movie Lion King? 
If it's you, what planet are you in? Kidding aside. 

The movie is not only the greatest memory of my childhood days, but depicts a lot of lesson to be learned from. 
But back when I was a child, I could care less of the meaning behind the movie. 
What really matters during those very time is how fascinating Lions can be as they are known to be the King of the Jungle. 
How they rule the kingdom and how the rest of the animals pay respect to their kind. 
How lovely it is to become a Lion and how brave they perceive to the rest of their kinds. Later on, as I ponder deeply into the story, what amazes me is the diversity of a simple Disney cartoon story to the way it symbolizes to human moral and most specifically in terms of the family values.
The story commenced when Simba was pronounced as a Prince, next to the throne of his Father King Mufasa. Simba was a very loved son by his parents and they portray a happy and wonderful family. 
Mufasa raised Simba in a manner to prepare him worthy of the throne and realizing that being the future King is a great responsibility.
But this does not deprived Simba of enjoying his childhood and exploring even the forbidden areas of the kingdom. 
Little did they know that the villain Scar, Simba's uncle, was plotting to kill the father and son to take hold of the throne as a King. A wild and frenzy herd led to the death of Mufasa and Simba was convinced by Scar to be the reason of his father's unfavorable death.
He then went off the Kingdom feeling devastated and meet new friends. 
As the years go by, he became the exact replica of his father and was eventually certain to take back the throne from Scar having realized all the evil conspicuous desire of his uncle. 
This led to a battle between families and ultimately, Simba won back the Kingdom. Formed his own family, and lived a happy ever after life. As it is always in a Disney movie.
As every other father who represents the man of the family, no matter how strong they show they are, their family which is mostly their kids is their primary Kryptonite (weakness). 
A father would only want what's best for their kids and it is how Mufasa reflects in the story.
As for Simba, you can never run away from difficulties in life.

In the Circle of Life, a theme song of the movie:

【コース内容について】

英検一次対策
前回も多数の生徒様が英検取得を目指されたようです。
無事に合格された方は次へのステップとして、残念ながら・・・という方には万全の対策として集中レッスンがお勧めです。
まだまだ時間があると思っているうちにすぐに10/13（日）の試験日はやってきます。
対策は早めにじっくりと行うことで当日の試験に臨む気分も違ってくることでしょう。

Grammer
ご要望の多いグラマーを今回もご用意させていただきました。
沢山ある中から、まだよく理解していない分野をお選びいただけるので、あやふやだったことがクリアーになり、自信をもって使えるようになります。
少しづつ克服していけば、確実にステップアップしていけます。

Movie Dialogues
映画を字幕なしで見れたらいいな、思ったことが皆様きっとあると思います。
映画は生きた日常会話を学べる絶好の教材です。
でも早すぎるし、ストーリーにもついていかないといけないし・・・と急には難しいですね。
今回はいくつか映画をチョイスして、ストーリーの概要を知った上で、一場面を取り上げた実際の会話を学んでいただきます。
すでに見たことがある映画ならさらに理解しやすいでしょう。
約4レッスンで１つの映画トピックが終了します。

Cooking Recipes
インターネット上には料理のレシピが数え切れないほどあります。
英語で書かれたものは分量や材料もよくわからなかったり、説明にはあまり馴染みのない動詞が沢山出てきます。
そんなレシピを楽しみながら英語を学べる美味しいコースです。
レッスン後はさっそく実践と試食ですね。
