The price of architecture by Anca Milut
Working recently on the Shibayama Mansion project and making study models of potential layouts that could lead to the best solutions got me thinking about the price and value of architecture in society today.
It’s been two months since I arrived in Geneto, Kyoto office from London. To my great relief it has been confirmed that no matter where you practice architecture there are far greater similarities then differences and language posts no barriers when it comes to good and innovative design. However, the lack of awareness from society for the need of an architect persists even in the Far East.
In the UK apartment buildings have long been associated with the poor working class. Starting from workhouses, to terraced housing to the current day council estates where space is minimal and living costs are low. Traditionally constructors would build these dwellings using standard, cheap and quick methods. Cities have been shaped this way resulting in the masses of banal architecture we are faced with everyday.
Luckily in the 21st century there are some who realize the need for an architect in making living and working conditions more efficient and more enjoyable. Human nature has always pushed us to strive for more, improve and innovate so it is to be expected to want to enhance everyday experiences, which can be achieved through architecture.
In London, where space is very limited, there is a new wave of apartment buildings for the ever-growing middle class who can afford new homes that are designed by architects. If you can accept and understand from the beginning that you are paying for a premium to have the best of every thing including finishes, design and efficient layouts in your home then there is no other place better suited then an architect design home. Examples include : Central St Giles apartments, The Bramah Chelsea, One Hyde Park (high end)
I hope the Shibayama project will be successful in respect to societies appreciation of the work Geneto will put in to making it the best it can be. It is bound to set a precedent in the office’s portfolio as the biggest project to date and perhaps it can be the beginning to bringing a bit of architectural thinking regarding housing and living in Kyoto.

GENETO夏祭り2011の様子 by 山中コ〜ジ
GENETO夏祭り2011が8月21日に開催されました。
今回の夏祭りは約50名の参加者となり、雨ではありましたが大盛り上がりの一日でした。
雨だったため、前日に急遽テントがはられました。
このテントですが、簡易的に作られているものの、雨水についても収容人数についても考慮されており、なかなか良かった。
11時からゆっくりペースでスタートされた夏祭り、先ずはカレー作りから始まりました。
カレーの後は流し素麺はできませんでしたが、素麺を頂きながら昼食時間を過ごしました。
夕食までの間に、GENETOバッジ2011モデルの発表をおこないました。
今年は切り絵アーティストの佐川綾野氏が描いてくださいました。
会場にて、佐川氏よりGENETOバッジを描いた想いやコンセプトが語られました。
今年はGENETO／pivotoによるデザインと、佐川氏の図案含めて330個のバッジを作りました。
例年同じくらいの量ですが、一年でほぼ無くなってしまいます。
今年のバッジも色々な力作が揃っています。
特に今年はpivotoのバッジの出来栄が素晴らしい。
様々なイベント等でお配り致しますので、今回不参加の方も是非とも何かの機会にもらってください。
TANADAピースギャラリー オーナーの大植登氏は、火をおこす事が大好きです。
いつもBBQに来ては人知れずこの作業に没頭。
インターンでGENETO京都事務所に来ているアンカも、ルーマニアのお酒を作って振る舞ってくれました。
このお酒は、甘くて想像以上に美味しかった。
夜になると、料理人によるフードクリエーションとBBQが始まります。
フードクリエーションの様子は、内容が濃いため次回に回すとして、近江牛の焼き肉と塩鯖の丸焼き等、次々に作られていきます。
人数も集まり会場は一杯。
お酒も入っていつも通りの大盛り上がり。
朝11時から始まった夏祭りは10時くらいで一旦終わります。
最後にGENETO景品争奪のジャンケン大会。
今年はGENETOワイン2011を1点、GENETOの誉れを1点、クローバースツールを1点、友人のお土産高級マッコリを１点。
GENETOワイン2011を見事獲得したのはグラフィックデザイナーの門谷和泉氏。
このワインは限定20本だけ毎年作っているものなので、今年の後半は幸運な予感がする彼女。
こうしてGENETO夏祭り2011は無事終了しました。
皆さんを送り出した後、残った人達でGENETO裏夏祭りが始まります。
先ずは焼きそばを頂き、スイカ割りが始まりました。

数名がトライしましたが、なかなか上手く当たらない。
結局割ったのは、目隠しをしないで挑んだ前田展広氏。
その後もしゃべり続けて終わったのは0時。
今年も無事GENETO夏祭りを終え、大きな年間行事の一つが終わり、一安心と同時に夏が終わろうとしている事に寂しさも感じます。
次回は、今年の特別企画 料理人によるフードクリエーションについて書きます。
