Vol.78 Spring/Summer 2011: 6
Spring/Summer 2011: 6
House in Lincoln Center (Fashion Week’s new site), was the most
exciting one.
Twenty five years ago, Tommy Hilfiger had a spectacular debut,
with a stunning advertising strategy and an ad I remember very well.
Using the initials of top designers Perry Ellis (PE), Calvin Klein (CK),
Ralph Lauren (RL), the ad said that the next big designer would be
Tommy Hilfiger (TH).
Now 25 years later, the Tommy Hilfiger brand has penetrated the
world and he has become a billionaire. A 64 page special section in
the September 14th issue of Women’s Wear Daily, celebrated the
25th Anniversary, outlining Hilfiger’s career path, licensees and stores,
including news of the opening of his flagship store on Fifth Avenue
later that week. Tommy Hilfiger could be called the man who’s
“American Dream” came true.
The 25th Anniversary Party started outside, with 25 handsome
“Tommy Boys” (male models paid $300 each, dressed identically,
head to toe in Tommy Hilfiger), standing on red carpeting welcomed
guests moving them toward gigantic, flashing TH initials at the entrance.
Inside, a huge American flag topiary was centered between the two
Lobby staircases. The party used all the lobbies of The Metropolitan
Opera House, which with their distinctive lighting alone, made a great
effect.
Jennifer Lopez, Lenny Kravitz and many movie and television stars attended.
Although I couldn’t to take their pictures, I did take one of Tommy Hilfiger
surrounded by his models.
Because Hilfiger loves rock music, that was the party’s theme.
DJ Paul made the party exciting with great music.
At 11:00 p.m., the popular band “The Strokes” gave a tremendous
performance.
Guests were in high spirits, with many dancing.
But for me, the music was too loud, and after a day of many fashion shows,
it made me tired.
Food and drink are essential to a good party and Hilfiger provided plenty
to a crowd of over 1,000 people. The guests seemed happy with it all.
The party and music continued until midnight. What amazing New Yorkers!
Every time I attend big parties like this, I am so impressed by New Yorker’s
energy and stamina. Afterwards, many guests went on to other parties
and clubs. New Yorkers Never Sleep!
