今日は、[同級生] について、面白い記事を読んだ。
I read an interesting article this morning.
[同級生] って、同じクラスの人？同じ学年の人？
そして、学校が違うけど、学年は一緒なら、その人も同級生？
It was about the word doukyusei. Does this refer to someone in the same homeroom? The same school year? How about someone the same age but going to a different school?

ちなみに、英語で、[同級生] って、何という？
Do you know how to say dokyusei in English?
名詞にすると、classmateしかない。
There only word we really have is “classmate.”
これは、学校も学年も一緒の人を示す言葉です。
This word refers to someone in the same year and same school as you.
“We were classmates in high school.”
同じ学年だけど、違う学校に行っている人なら、
“We are the same age.”
“We graduated the same year.”
学年がバラバラけど学校が同じなら、
“We went to school together.” という。
じゃ、同期は？
So how about douki?
これは、本当に独特な日本語だから、英語に当てはまる単語はない。
This is really a unique Japanese term which has no equivalent.
同じ時に、同じ会社で働き始めた場合、
“We started working here at the same time.”
“We entered the company at the same time.”
会社が違うけど、同じ年と同じ業界なら、
“We started working at the same time.”
“We began our careers at the same time.”
職業も入れてもいい。
“We began our careers as announcers at the same time.”
“We started our careers as announcers at the same time.”
会社は同じなら、colleague, co-workerという。
日本語でいうと、[同僚] だ。
“He’s my colleague.”
“He’s my co-worker.”
“We work together.”
日本は、上下関係を大事にする文化だから、[同級生] や[同期] みたいな言葉が生まれる。先輩や後輩など区別する必要があるからね。
These terms are born out of the hierarchical system which Japanese culture so highly values. I mean, you gotta be able to distinguish someone your age from your sempai and kohai!
今日は、上記の記事を読んだ時、改めて言葉と文化の繋がりの強さについて気づかされた。
I was reminded again today when I read that article about the strong link between language and culture.
言葉は、適当に誕生しないけんさ！
Remember that new words are not born at random at all!!
