先週、やっと対面の授業が始まった。
So last week, one of the schools where I teach finally started in-person classes.
毎学期の授業の初回に、「アン先生に質問タイム」がある。
私に聞きたいことがあれば、何でも聞いていいよ！年齢を聞いても全然大丈夫だよ！みたいな感じ。
During the first class of each semester, I always give the students a chance to ask me questions about anything. I tell them nothing is off limits, and that they can even ask me how old I am.
で、学生の殆どは、こういう質問を聞く。
And the students ask me questions like this.
"What do you like animal?"
"What do you like color?"
"What do you like Japanese food?"
"What do you like place?"
言いたいことは、これだ。
This is what they want to say.
「何の動物が好きですか？」
「好きな色は何ですか？」
「好きな日本料理は何ですか？]」
「どこが好きですか。」
もちろん、学生が言いたいことはわかるけれど、英語の単語の順番が違う。正しい単語順は、
Of course, I understand what they are asking me, but the English word order is wrong. Here is the correct way.
"What animal do you like?"
"What Japanese food do you like?"
"What color do you like?"
"What place do you like?"
これは、文法的に間違っていないけど、もっと自然な言い方がある。
But there is a way more natural way to say it.
"What's your FAVORITE ANIMAL?"
"What is your FAVORITE Japanese food?"
"What is your FAVORITE color?"
"What's your FAVORITE place?"
ただ、英語では、「favorite」とか「best」は「一番」の意味しかない。
However, in English, "favorite" and "best" mean number one.
やけん、favoriteと言ったら、他より好きという意味。
In other words, you can only have one favorite.
ただ、興奮している時, アメリカ人は、何でも極端に言う傾向がある。favoriteじゃない時もfavoriteを使いがちだ。
But since many Americans tend to exaggerate stuff when they are excited, they tend to call something their "favorite" even if it is not really their absolute favorite.
"She's my favorite person!"
"This is my favorite song"
"This is my favorite show."
"This is favorite restaurant!"
まあ、本当に一番の時もあるけれど、多くの人は「大好き」みたいなニュアンスで言っている。
Of course, there are people who used "favorite" when they really mean it, but many people use it in a way like the Japanese daisuki.
同じように、best friendは、「一番好きな、一番仲がいい友達」に示す言葉だ。大親友だ。
In the same way, when you call someone your "best friend," it means that is the person you like hanging out with the most, the person that you are closest to.
何かが大好きだけど、一番となかなか言えない時に、こういうふうに言ってね。
If you can't say you like something or someone the best, but you really like it a lot, you can use phrases like these.
"She is one of my favorite people."
"This is one of favorite songs."
"This is one of my favorite shows."
"This is one of my favorite restaurants."
"She is one of my best friends."
