ちなみに、[コラボ] はバリバリ和製英語だ。人はコラボする場合、team upと言っていいと思う。work togetherも使う。
By the way, the word colabo is an awesome Japanese English word. When referring to people, you can use “team up” or maybe “work together.”
けど、物は違う。去年、誰かが、こういうことを私に言った。
But it’s different when referring to things. Last year, somebody said this to me:
「白ごはんと餃子は、最高に良いコラボだ！」
“White rice and fried gyoza dumplings are the best colabo!”
この場合、”they go well together” or “they taste great together” を言ってね！
In this case, you can say “they go well together” or “they taste great together.”
コラボは、[コラボレーション] の略だ。英語の意味と、和製英語の意味は近いけど、英語のcollaborationは、ちょっとビジネスやインテリ用語っぽい。
Colabo is an abbreviation of the word “collaboration.” The English meaning is close to the Japanese English meaning, but the English is use mostly for business tie-ups or intellectual pursuits.
“This is a collaboration between Sony and the local government.” みたいな。
動詞は、collaborate. 何故か、動詞のほうが普通の人は使うような気がする。
The verb is collaborate. For some reason, It feels like the verb is more likely to be used by the average Joe.
最後に、ネガティブな意味もある。
Lastly, “collaborate” can have a negative meaning, too. Let’s look at an example.
“He collaborated with the enemy, and betrayed his country.”
この場合、[敵と結託して、国を裏切った] というニュアンスがある。
