北アイルランド問題と〝鉄の女〟サッチャー元首相
1980年代の北アイルランドを舞台にした警察小説、エイドリアン・マッキンティの〝刑事ショーン・ダフィ〟シリーズをもう少し続けたい。日本が空前のバブル景気に狂奔していた時代、北アイルランドはアフガン化し戦闘状態に入る。局地戦争故、かえってリビアなど他国の介入を招き混乱を極める。
（西ベルファストの）夜が落ちてくる。空はビールの色をしている。… 都市での戦争。民間人がひしめくなかでの戦争。ひとつまちがえば君は命を落とす。もうひとつまちがえばニュースで報道される（第３巻510p）。ような非日常が常態化したなかで、犯罪課刑事は〝あり得べくもない日常〟を維持しようとする。
マッキンティの世界は、廃墟で行なわれた（小さいと思われた）犯罪が、その足取りをたどっていくうちにさまざまな過激派組織の思惑や、米FBIに英MI5.6が絡まったタペストリーはノワールならざるを得ず、主人公ショーンは警察という組織にありながら、心ならずも規範から外れていく。次巻が待ち遠しい。
本シリーズのタイトルはすべてトム・ウェイツの曲名から採られている。
