今回は前半はメール、後半はチャットでのやり取りを見ていきます。今日のテーマは予算を策定するです。
リエは海外拠点のマーケティングチームに対して、来年度予算の提出を求める一斉メールを出します。

相手の反応を見据えた上で厳しい条件を伝えるメールですね。ではこのメールを詳しく見ていきましょう。
I'm sending you the application form for the marketing expense budget for overseas entities. Could you fill in the relevant sections and return it to me by Friday, the 17th?
まず、費用の申請という要件を明確にした上で、期限までに関連箇所に記入するように依頼しています。relevantは「関連した」「関係した」という意味ですから、例えばsections relevant to youと言うと「あなたに関連した箇所」となります。

procurement cost(仕入れコスト)の増加が利益に影響を与えた。という理由に続いてuniform 10 percent cut(一律10%カット)という組織決定をしています。
そして今回のポイントの英文はこちらです。

We know this is toughと読み手の気持ちに共感した上で、we kindly ask you～とkindlyを使って丁寧に依頼しています。
10%削減なんてひどいという海外拠点からの反応を先読みしたかのような言い方ですね。まあ経営陣が決めたことですから、本来リエは頭を下げる必要はないのですが。経営陣の方針を理解した上で数字を提出してもらうことを考えたメールと言えるでしょう。
それではここでリエのメールのシャドーイングをしてみましょう。
リエの一斉メールに対して、今度はバンクーバー支社のジミーから返信が来ました。ジミーは申請書に記入して次の一言でしています。

omissionは「抜け」「漏れ」を指す言葉です。
この他にこんな風に言うことができます。

completeは「完全な」「完璧な」「仕上がっている」という意味の形容詞です。それでは、この返信メールを見てみましょう。

自分の思いをダイレクトに伝えていますね。まず今回のポイントですが、予算についてどのように問いかけているでしょうか?

そうですね。この1文で自分の疑問不満をストレートに伝えています。メールではこんなふうには書かないとまでは言いませんが、チャットのほうが自分の感情が表に出やすい傾向があります。
最後のRie, any cool ideas to get some extra cash for travel expenses?は、do you have any ideasのdo you haveが省略された形でチャットでよく見られる文体です。
Shaba: Any other expressions typically used for chat?
Jenny: "Cool ideas" would probably be expressed as, "good ideas" in an e-mail.
Shibata: Mmm, a good point.
随所にチャットらしい表現が散りばめられていますね。
今度はアンドリューにリエが返信します。リエはアンドリューからのリクエストに次のように応えようとしています。
そう簡単じゃないけど、やってみます。
It's not that simple, but I'll give it a try.
「やってみる」は、単にtryでもいいですが、give it a tryもよく使う言い方ですので、覚えておきましょう。
このほかにどんな表現があるでしょか。
Shibata; Could you provide us with an alternative sentence?
Jenny: It's also possible to say, "It's not that easy, but I'll give it a go".
Shibata: Oh, that's a good one, too.

point takenは「了解です」。I understand your point.というところをこのようにチャットらしい短い言い方で示しています。
最後のfingers crossedも同様です。Keep your fingers crossed(祈っていてください)を短くした言い方です。
