Lidia Grace: Many people aren't deeply tied to their families, and they're grappling with life-defining decisions, from academic coursework to career paths. Loneliness is reported by young adults and older adults alike, from baby boomers to the millennials, to Gen. Z.
Tim Blanco: Indeed. America has become a lonely nation. But loneliness and isolation affect entire communities. Social disconnection is also linked to diminished civic engagement. When we're less invested in one another, we're less able to come together to face the challenges that we can't solve alone, from climate change and gun violence to economic inequality, and future pandemics.
Jane Rosenberg: Loneliness isn't just an American problem. It's a feature of modern life around the world. Participation in community organizations in the US, from faith groups to recreational gatherings, has declined in recent decades. Fewer of us joined civic or community organizations. We're less likely than previous generations to attend churches, synagogues, or mosques. We tend to overwork, over schedule, and underutilize our potential.
Tim Blanco: Plus, fewer people are getting married, and couples are having fewer children. Researchers have found that living alone, being in poor health, having infrequent social interactions, and being unmarried are predictors of loneliness in all age groups.
Jane Rosenberg: Americans are marrying later and are more likely to move around frequently. These two factors are also related to higher rates of social isolation and feelings of loneliness.
