空気読めない! Derailing a meeting

A long time ago when our daughter was a junior high school student, my wife had a chance to attend a meeting with teachers, parents and students. 

The theme was how to make our children study school subjects hard. Many hot opinions were exchanged and suggested by parents and teachers according to the theme. 

娘が中学生だったとき、妻はその中学のいわゆる父兄、先生と子どもの三者懇談に参加する機会がありました。そのテーマはいかに子どもたちを真剣に勉強させるかだった。そのテーマに沿って多くの白熱した意見が交わされた。

When it was my wife’s turn to express her opinion, she said, “ If our children don’t like to study, we won’t have to force them study and just let them do what they like.” 

A silence came to the meeting.

妻の意見を述べる番になったとき、彼女は「子どもたちが勉強が嫌いなら無理にさせる必要はない、子どもたちの好きなようにさせたらいい。」と言ったら、静けさがその会議に漂ったらしい。

Our daughter asked her mother never to attend the school meeting anymore. Since then I was the one who had attended the school meetings.

娘は二度と学校の会議には来ないでと頼んだ。

それ以来、この種の学校の会議に出席するのは私になった。

すみません、妻は当時はまだ日本語が拙く日本社会とのギャップもかなりあったと思います。

今はもう少し改善されている筈？です。

ツル？の恩返し A kindness in return?

Once upon a time, there lived a young hunter in a village. One day, in a mountain, he happened to see a large white bird with an injured wing. He felt pity for the bird and gave it a treatment.

The bird got well and flew away looking back again and again.

昔、昔　ある村に若い猟師が住んでいました。　ある日、山で傷ついた白い鳥を助けて手当てをすると、その鳥は何度も振り返りながら飛び去りました。

After a while, it was a snowy night when someone knocked on his door. He wondered who  knocked at such a late hour and opened the door. He saw a young beautiful lady standing there. She said, “I am a traveler but lost my way. Please let me stay with you tonight.”

He invited her into his house without hesitation.

それから冬のある雪の夜、誰かが彼の家の戸を叩いた。　トン！トン！彼はこんな夜更けに一体誰だろうと戸を開けると、そこには若い美しい女性が立っていました。彼女は「私は旅のもので道に迷ってしまい、一夜泊めて頂きたいのです。」彼はもちろんと彼女を招き入れました。

She said, “As a token of my appreciation, I’ll weave beautiful cloth for you tonight but please promise me not to see me while I’m weaving.” ( Isn’t it the same as that famous story so far? And he believed so, too.)

彼女が言うには「お礼に私は今晩、素晴らしい布を織って差し上げます。でも私の織っている姿は絶対に見ないと約束して下さい。」とここまではあの有名な話と同じですね。彼もきっとそうだと信じていました。

He even heard the sound of weaving from the room. Next morning when he went to the room, he found no one there. 

She disappeared with his all money. “Oh my god! That was a sound of searching my drawers for money.

It wasn’t the crane, then what was that?”

彼は夜更けに彼女のいる部屋からカタンコトンという音まで聞こえたのです。

でも翌る朝、彼が急いで彼女の部屋に行くと彼女の姿が消えていたのです。おまけに彼の全財産のお金まで。「しまった！あのカタンコトンという音は私のタンスや押し入れを探る音だった。

ツルだと思っていたあの白い鳥は一体？」

何だったと思いますか？

My trouble is not shingles 帯状疱疹でなかった

About a few weeks ago, I felt something hard on my eyebrow and I pinched it and pulled it. It was a black thick hair. But after that, my eyebrow got swollen and painful.
I went to see a dermatologist. He said, “There are two possibilities, one is shingles caused by viruses and the other might be inflammation caused by germs. So I’ll give you antibiotics and anti-virus medicine. Either of them can work. Please come and see me 4 days later.” Yesterday I went to see him. He said, “Youhave recovered from the trouble which was not caused by virus. It means it was not shingles.”  I was relieved hearing it.

この間、眉毛の一部に硬い箇所があって気になって抜くと、腫れて痛み始めた。皮膚科に行くと帯状疱疹か毛穴にバイ菌が入った感染症かどちらかなので抗生剤と抗ウィルス剤をくれました。どちらかが効くということ。4日間2種の薬を飲んで昨日、その皮膚科に行くと帯状疱疹ではなかった。もう治りかけているとのこと。ほっとしました。
