A symbol of diligence

This morning I happened to see a statue of a boy named ‘Ninomiya Kinjiro’ beside the gate of an elementary school.

In my childhood, every elementary school used to have the statue whose shape is a walking boy with a bundle of firewood on the back reading a book. It was a symbol of diligence. 

Nowadays we seldom see these statues because child working is not recommended and moreover walking with reading book is dangerous.

今朝、ある小学校の校門脇に二宮金次郎の立像を見かけました。私の子どもの頃はどの小学校にも薪を背中に背負って本を読みながら歩く少年の像がありました。それは勤勉の象徴でした。

近ごろはめったに見かけませんね、というのは子どもの労働は奨励されないし、読書しながら歩くのは危険だからです。

An earthquake happened. 地震と野生動物

Yesterday we had an earthquake in the an large area around Osaka. Fortunately it didn't give any damage since it was not very strong. The epicenter was in the south west of Nara prefecture near the active fault known as  Median Tectonic Line.

When it happened, I was having a private lesson with a college student.  At first,I felt I had a kind of dizziness but the next moment I realized it was an earthquake.  Unlike other natural disasters,  we still can't predict exactly when and where a quake will occur. It's said that some wild animals or fish have the ability to perceive them in advance.

A few days before the large quake hit Kobe and northern Osaka 31 years ago, while my second sister was driving a car, she experienced an abnormal phenomenon that the front landscapes looked distorted. Some people say quakes  produce some electromgnetic waves and may cause such a phenomenon.   

  It means my sister is a kind of wild animal, isn't she?

昨日、大阪周辺の広い地域で地震がありました。幸い、あまり強くはなかったので被害はありませんでした。震源地は中央構造線として知られる活断層の近くの奈良県南西部でした。それが起きたときは私は大学生とプライベートレッスン中でした。最初はめまいかなと思ったがすぐに地震だと気が付きました。他の自然災害と違って、まだ私たちはいつどこで地震が起きるのかは正確には予測できません。ある野生の動物や魚は事前にそれらを予知する能力があると言われています。

31年前に阪神淡路大震災の数日前に私の二番目の姉が車を運転していたとき前方の景色が歪んで見えるという異常な体験をしました。何人かの人は地震はある種の電磁波を発生するのでそのような現象を生き起こす可能性はあると言っています。

それって私の姉は一種の野生動物ということかな？

Rainy season used to be in May

It's May todaty. In old Japanese, it is called 'Satsuki'.  We have a word 'Satsukibare' which means 'beautiful and sunny weather  in May'.  But in those days when we they used a lunar calender, 'Satsuki' was a time of the rainy season.

Satsukibare originally meant ' rare sunny weather in the rainy season.

今日は5月です。古い日本語では「さつき」と呼ばれています。五月の素晴らしく晴れた天気を意味する「さつきばれ」という言葉があります。しかし旧暦を使っていた当時は「さつき」は梅雨の時期だった。「さつきばれ」は元は梅雨の合間の晴れを意味していました。

これは明智光秀が本能寺の変の直前の歌会で披露した和歌と言われています。

　　「ときは今　雨が下知る　さつきかな」これは単に「今は雨が降る５月だな」と梅雨を詠んだとも

「時は今　天下ねらう　５月だ」とまた「とき」は「土岐」にかけているとも解釈されます。光秀の出身は土岐氏だったから。反逆を疑われるような和歌を歌会で公表するかな、信長にチクられたら困る？いや戦国武将の心意気かもとか。
