５月中旬から、翻訳などの在宅ワークを含めて少し就職活動を始めた。ハローワークに行って話をしたり面接を受けたりと、少しずつ社会との関わりが増えてきている。
この歳になっても市場には求人があり「まだまだ自分には市場価値があるのだ」と思うと、少し自信が湧いてきた。まあ、会社の取締役など65歳を過ぎてもバリバリ働いている人がいるのだから、さほど驚くことでもないのかも知れない。
以下の東北大の英作文は、「知の限界」への挑戦と「文化」との関係をテーマとしている。科学だけでなくスポーツや芸術にも言及したやや難解な内容となっている。英文をどう組み立てるか？受験生には結構難しかったのではないか。
（問題）
次の文章を読み、下線部(A)、(B)を英語に訳しなさい。
私たちには、どこか純粋に限界というものに挑戦したいという願望がある。もし、人間の全細胞数という未知の<知>があるのであれば、何とかしてそれを知りたい。知の限界があるのであれば、それを乗り越えたい。そんな願望は、何としてでも100メートルで10秒を切りたいという欲求とどこかで通じていないだろうか。多くの人たちが、誰が10秒の壁を破れるかにわくわくしてきたが、10秒を0.01秒でも切ることが、いったい何の役に立つのか、そんな問いを発する人は少なかったはずである。
(A)誰もまだ到達したことのない未知の世界を究めてみたい、美術、音楽などの芸術の世界から芸能の世界まで、そんな純粋な欲求が「文化」を支えている。スポーツを含めて文化というものが、何の役に立つかという観点から論じられることはまずないと言ってもいいだろう。
(B)サイエンティストと呼ばれる一群の人々は、この知の限界に挑戦することを楽しむ人々である。その成果だけでなく、知の限界への挑戦のプロセスそのものを含めて、それが「文化」なのだ。「文化」には役に立つ、立たないの区別は意味を持たない。役に立たなくとも、そんな「知りたいという欲求」を「文化」として支援してゆくシステムが必須である。

We have a pure desire to challenge our limits in some way. If there is an unknown “knowledge” of the total number of cells of a human being, we want to know it by some means or other. If there is a limit to knowledge, we want to overcome it. Isn’t such a desire somehow linked with the desire to break 10 seconds in 100 meters at all costs? Many people have been excited about who can break the 10-second wall, but few people have asked the question of what good it is to break 10 seconds by even 0.01 seconds.
(A) Such a pure desire that we want to thoroughly study unknown worlds that no one has yet reached supports the “culture” from the world of art, such as fine art and music to the world of entertainment. It is safe to say that culture, including sports, can hardly be discussed from the viewpoint of what it is useful for.
(B) A group of people called scientists are those who enjoy challenging this limits of knowledge. “Culture” includes not only the results, but also the process of challenging the limits of knowledge itself. With regard to a “culture,” it doesn’t make any sense whether it is useful or not. Even if a culture is not useful, a system that can support such a “desire to know” as a “culture” is indispensable.
