「中絶読書」と聞いて「えっ！」と不審に思う人も多いだろう。私もそうだった。中絶読書とは、本を読みさし（読みかけ）でやめることをいう。
私の蔵書にも読みかけてやめた本が結構あるが、外山滋比古氏によれは、それが知的創造に繋がるという。さて、どういうことなのか。

「中絶読書」は、読み切らないで、おもしろくなりそうなところで、つまりスピードが出たところで、本から離れ、そこに生じる慣性を利用して自分の考えを浮び上がらせようとすることにほかならない。芸術作品なら全部を読み通したうえでの余韻がなくては困るが、知的な文章では最後まで付き合っては、あまりに多く影響を受けすぎることになってしまいおもしろくない場合もある。本はきっかけになればよいし、走り出させてくれればそれでりっぱな働きをしたことになる、そういう読書もある。
おもしろすぎて先を読むのがこわくなるような本がときどきあるというのは、途中で切って、そこに創造的慣性の作用を起すことを、われわれが心のどこかで期待しているからかもしれない。

“Leaving a book half-read” is nothing more than not reading it all, but moving away from the book where it is likely to become interesting, that is to say, when the reading speed increases, and using the inertia generated there to try to bring your thoughts to the surface. In case of a work of art, a resonance is absolutely necessary after reading through it all, however, in case of an intelligent writing, if you get along with it to the end, you will have too much influence, which may not be interesting in some cases. Such an intelligent writing should be a trigger which could spur you into running, and if so, it has played a great role for you. This is also a manner of reading.
We sometimes find a book that would be so interesting that we may feel scary to read it ahead, which may be because we expect somewhere in our hearts to cut it off and create an action of creative inertia in it.
