TV番組「プレバト」をよく観る。俳句のみならず絵画のジャンルも面白い。水彩画、色鉛筆画、黒板画などを精密に描ける能力はやはり天賦のもののように思える。
私に絵画、音楽、料理、スポーツのいずれが一つでも才能があったならば、今は全く別の人生を歩んでいたかもしれない。そんな才能がある人が羨ましい。
３月に東京で旧交を温めたばかりだが、４月にも３回ほど旧友との再会が予定されている。今年は「再会の年」となりそうである。せいぜい体調にだけは注意するようにしよう。
以下は「英文表現法」から絵の描き方に関する山内 恭彦の文章である。自然の中から何を取捨選択するか、そんな自然の抽象化の能力はさほど簡単に修得できる技術ではない。
（問題）
絵を描くには、目に見える自然の細部までももれなく忠実に描くのが得策ではない。むしろ大胆な省略を行って、主題になっているものの迫力を増すことが有効である。だから眼前の自然からの取捨選択が絵の巧拙に大きな影響をもつ。物理学で自然現象を研究するときにも似たことがいえる。目前の自然はたいへん複雑である。この雑多な自然を、なにもかも取り入れて、省略なしに取扱おうとすれば、手に負えないものになるのは当たり前である。そこである観点にしぼって、興味の対象となる問題を限定して、それに必要欠くべからざるもののほかは思い切って捨ててしまう。このことは、自然の簡単化、モデル化、抽象化などということばで呼ばれている。

It is not advisable for drawing a picture to be faithful to all visual details of nature completely. Rather than doing so, it is effective to emphasize the punch of the subject matter by making bold omissions to the nature. Therefore, the choice from the nature lying before our eyes has a great influence on the skillfulness of the picture. Similar things can be applied to studying natural phenomena in physics. The nature lying in front of our eyes is very complicated. If we try to take in all of this this miscellaneous nature and handle it without omission, it will naturally become beyond our control. Accordingly, we will limit the issues that may interest us by narrowing ourselves down to a certain viewpoint, and discard everything that is not dispensable to the issues. This is called the simplification, modeling, or abstraction of nature.
