英語で「鍍金（めっき）」を “plating”, “coating” と言うが、動詞は “plate”, “coat” である。「亜鉛めっき」は “zinc plating” よりは “galvanizing” を使う場合が多く、動詞は “galvanize” となる。

鍍金を調べていてある表現に遭遇した。それは「鍍金が剥げる」という慣用句で「外面の飾りがとれて悪い中身が暴露する。本性があらわれる。地金が出る。」という意味である。
「鍍金が剥げる」の場合、当然に上に書いた技術用語ではなく “show one’s true colors” とか動詞 “betray (oneself)” を使うようである。この “betray” という動詞だが、意味は知っていてもビジネス英語では滅多にお目にかからない語である。以下に定義を記載する。

1) If you betray someone who loves or trusts you, your actions hurt and disappoint them.
「人が、その人を愛する、または信頼する人を傷つけ、失望させる行動をすること。」
2) If someone betrays their country or their friends, they give information to an enemy, putting their county’s security or their friends’ safety at risk.
「祖国の防護、または友人の安全を危険に曝す情報を、敵（国）に漏らすこと。」
3) If you betray an ideal or your principles, you say or do something which goes against those beliefs.
「自分の理想や信条に反したことを言う、または反した行動をとること。」
4) If you betray a feeling or quality, you show it without intending to.
「意図せずに（うっかり）、自分の感情または本性を現す（ぼろを出す）こと。」

「鍍金が剥げる」は上記4)に該当する。なお文中の “without intending to” は「代不定詞（“pro-infinitive”）」と呼ばれる不定詞の用法である。以下に4)の例文を記載する。

= Her pale face betrayed (the fact) that she was afraid.
