動詞 “imagine” の形容詞 “imaginable”, “imaginative”, “imaginary” 、動詞 “succeed” の形容詞 “successful”, “successive” 、動詞（名詞） “respect” の形容詞 “respectable”, “respectful”, “respective” 等々、同じ語から複数の形容詞が派生し、その意味が異なるものは数多い。
ただ名詞 “flame” から派生した形容詞 “flammable”, “inflammable” はどちらも「可燃性の」という意味なので注意が必要である。「不燃性の」の意味の反意語は “nonflammable” である。

前回の記事の中で “terrify” という動詞を使ったが、これから派生した形容詞 “terrible”, “terrific” の違いはやや複雑である。以下定義を確認する。
Terrible:
1) A terrible experience or situation is very serious or very unpleasant.
「経験や状況が非常に重大で不快な様。」
2) If you feel terrible, you feel extremely ill or unhappy. If you tell someone that they look terrible, you mean that they look as if they are extremely ill or unhappy.
「極端に気分が悪く、不幸に感じる様。また、他人が極端に気分が悪く、不幸に見える場合にも用いる。」
3) If something is terrible, it very bad or of very poor quality.
「物が非常に粗悪で、品質が悪い様。」
4) You use terrible to emphasize the great extent or degree of something.
「物の範囲の広さや程度の大きさを誇張する場合に用いる。」

Terrific:
1) If you describe something or someone as terrific, you are very pleased with them or very impressed by them.
「ある物や人に非常に満足している（気に入っている）、または非常に感銘を受けている様。」
2) Terrific means very great in amount, degree, or intensity.
「（物の）量、程度または強さが非常に大きい様。」

“Terrible”, “terrific” は共通して程度が「物凄い」場合に使われるが、基本的には “terrible” は「ひどく悪い・不愉快な」、 “terrific” は「素晴らしい・素敵な」と全く反対の意味になる。
He was driving his car at a terrible speed.
= He was driving his car at a terrific speed.
「彼は猛烈なスピードで車を運転していた。」
The scene was terrible to see.
「その光景は目も当てられないほどひどいものだった。」
That party was terrific.
「そのパーティーは素晴らしかった。」
He is terrible at dancing. (= He is a terrible dancer.)
「彼はダンスが下手だ。」
She is terrific with little children.
「彼女は小さな子供の扱いがうまい。」
