“Witness”は本来法務用語で、「証人」という意味の名詞として使ってきたが、工業・技術の世界においてはやや異なる意味に使い、また動詞として使われることも少なくない。
例えば“witness inspection”は「立会検査」のことをいい、動詞“witness”は「（ある操作などに）立ち会う」という意味に使う。
今回はこの“witness”について少し掘り下げて調べてみる。

英英辞典の定義（動詞・成句）は以下の通り。
Witness:
1) If you witness something, you see it happen. (= see)
「ある事が起こるのを見る（目撃する）こと。」
2) If someone witnesses your signature on a document, they write their name after it, to confirm that it really is your signature.
「書類に記された署名が真に本人のものであることを確認して、その署名の下に署名する（連署する）こと。」
3) If you say that a place, period of time, or person witnessed a particular event or change, you mean that it happened in that place, during that period of time, or while that person was alive. (= see)
