名詞 “prejudice” は「偏見、先入観」の意味で高校生でも知っている単語だが、この語の動詞の意味を知らない人は多い。
私は法務分野の翻訳からスタートしたので “without prejudice to” という成句を知り “prejudice” の本来の意味を調べる機会を得た。以下名詞と動詞の意味を再確認する。

Prejudice:
1) Prejudice is an unreasonable dislike of a particular group of people or things, or a preference for a one group of people or things over another.
「特定の集団の人もしくは物に対する非合理的な嫌悪、または特定の集団の人もしくは物を他の人もしくは物に対して選好（優先）すること」
2) If you prejudice someone or something, you influence them so that they are unfair in some way.
「何らかの方法で、特定の人または物が公正を欠くようにする（取り扱う）こと」
3) If someone prejudices another person’s situation, they do something which makes it worse than it should be.
「他の人の状況を本来そうあるべき状況より悪くするよう何らかの行為をすること」

1) の “preference for a one group of people or things over another” は所謂「依怙贔屓（えこひいき）」のことで英語では “favoritism” という。
なお “without prejudice to ~” という成句は「（他の人の既得権を）損なわないように」という意味である。
